Got my trenchers home. Two of them are 95% complete as far as I can tell. Here are the specs.

#1) Red CJ5, Vin# 8305 S 243177 I beleive this is a '69 or early '70?
Single stick dana 18
Duel res. master cylinder
Non-flanged 44
Small yellow front markers
No fender lights etc.
Wipers on bottom of windsheild
Smaller early radiator

Trencher: - (can't read plate as bracket is in the way.)


#2) Yellow CJ5 Vin# 8305 275927 Build date:1970 on dash
Single stick
Duel res.
Flanged 44!
Larger radiator
larger clear front markers
Marker lights in fenders
Gas tank under seat (this is odd I thought, but probalbly because there was no way to fit under the rear do to trencher drive shafts.)

Two of these still have the original grader blades on them as well. There made out of 3/8 steal really heavyduty. I was able to put a battery in them and both cranked over! The rear axles on these are an interesting setup. There the normal leaf spring setup, but then have coil springs mounted outboard of the frame to hold the extra weight. #1 has blades on the trencher chain, while #2 has sets of two carbide? tips along the chain. All three still have the complete govanor setup as well as the ag. weight on the front bumper, and Pto setup. Looks like a ramsey on the one I looked at with two rear drive shafts. There are even some of the original Auburn JeepAtrencher decals still visable on the back. The bodys are banged up and floors need help, but frames seem to be in good shape. This is amazing considering these trenchers are about 1700lbs extra pounds?
If anyone has any other info on Trenchers pipe in. I don't know how many years these where produced, but would love info. These have some historical value I would think as they have got to be some of the very last produced? I had no idea they where making them all the way tell 1970.

 

The one my buddy has is an Auburn. We still haven't come up with a manual but when I told him about you buying those he said he would gladly tell you how his ran and worked. They do weigh 1750 lbs I found and the backfill blades look the same as his. My JEEP had a blade like that on it with I purchased it but I removed it to install a winch. Let me know if there is anything I can do. I think there are a few pictures of his on my photobucket link.

 

his looks like it's in good shape. I need to run a fuel line and hook up a tank, pretty confident it will run then.

Wow, very cool, I was surprised to see they did not have the D70 rear, I thought all the trenchers did.

Besides it doesn't have the oringinal plow on it... holds nose in air.R) I have too many already.

 

My '60 may be an old trencher.

Has the gear on the transfercase brakedrum, had the mounts above the rear axle for the extra coil springs ( I removed them) and a big hole in the rear floor that is covered over with light metal sheeting. Heavy duty 3 1/2 " thick ten leaf rear springs. I mean, if I jump up and down in the back or bounce on the trailer hitch the back end does NOT move at all. Very stiff ride!

I saw a Trencher CJ5 for sale near Johnstown Pa about 5 or 10 years ago. The owner told me that it was made special order for Sunny Hanna Country Club. The trencher had dual rear wheels. I think they were 16" while the front wheels were 15". There was also another identicle trncher made at the same time for another country Club. Sunny Hanna CC also had a CJ5 with a rear mounted backhoe. I believe the year of the trencher was a 1965.

Post some pics I have 57 cj5 with a working trencher. It is all manual to lift the boom no hydraulics

 

If you ever get to see a trencher in person, do it. They look way intimidating.
