Subject...tranny....

    Dondo These are my good pants..

    Pulled out my transmission/transfercase a couple of weeks ago. The shiny piece with the grooves around it (that is sticking out of the front of the transmission) is loose and kind of wobbles around. It leaks gear oil out of every place that it can. Pops out of second, thunking sound when backing up.....anyway, it is time for a rebuild. What do I need? Rebuild kits? throwout bearings, special tools? Websites with instructions?
    Guess I should mention that it is the stock setup for a 1953 M38-a1, T90/18 Twin Stick.

    I've never attempted such a thing. But since I'm itching to drive the Jeep around, I need to get this done.

    Here are a few recommendations/comments: 1) don't worry too much about the front input shaft wiggling a little since the front of it is supported by the pilot bushing in the crank. To much wiggling, however, isn't good, but will likely be corrected by a rebuild; 2) it sounds like a rebuild is in your future. You can get great info on the web by doing a search for Dana 18 and T90 tranny. I would also try performing a search on this forum; 3) the rebuild kits will provide new bearings, seals, and syncro rings for second and third gear, but they will likely not provide new gears. Your issue of it popping out of second sounds like it could be worn syncro rings and/or springs on the shifting cluster (correct name I forgot) between second and third gear. The clunking in reverse sounds like chipped or missing teeth on first gear, the cluster gear, or the reverse idler in the bottom of the case; 4) having some oil leak out the front of the input shaft isn't uncommon and having oil leak(s) in the transfer case is very common. You can seal both up to a respectable level of leakage following the recommendations in this forum....just do a search.

    I would think it's worth your time to compare the prices of rebuilt vs. replacement. The gears and stuff for rebuild may be way more than just getting a different trans. Good info from herm and novack.

    Was just about to say so myself. Might have a whole tranny you could bolt in and go. How much stickout you got on that T-90? There's a good chance I'll be in Wichita on the 18th.

    Wait a minute...you guys have the parts I'd need? Well....I don't even know what I need. I was planning on buying the rebuild kit from Herm ($100 w/o gears, $180 w/gears) What parts do you have? What kind of shape is your extra transmission, Clint?

    Called around, about $600 for new/rebuilt or to rebuild mine.

    I thought that Herm's rebuild service was about half that ... checking ... yep.

    Pretty sure the $180 kit comes with a gear, not gears. If you need a gear, it's usually 2nd.

    My take-

    If you rebuild your tranny you have a fresh tranny.

    If you stick a used one in there you've got a used tranny which someone else figured should have been removed from their jeep for a good reason.

    I know people who have rebuilt their tranny, but never heard anyone say they were sorry they did it. I also know people who have put used trannys in, sometimes they were happy with the results, sometimes not :(

    I say re-build.


    Rebuilding a T90 is pretty easy, Rick Stiver's T90 Rebuild Guide & D18 xfer case guides make it simple even for a first timer. Get the "good" kit from Herm with the better quality bearings & the new 2nd gear, You will Not be Sorry.

    Thanks for the links. Those are exactly what I was looking for. Based on most of those pictures, I need to keep cleaning on the transmission case. Even after 2 days of scraping, I probably still have 5lbs of gunk on it. Got an email from Herm:

    HI Pieter,

    If you count the teeth on the output shaft of the D-18
    under the cover on the back that will tell me which
    t/f case you have and with a T-90 I can supply the
    rebuild kits.

    I guess that is the next step.

    I'm super busy for the next 3 days. I'll pull it apart this weekend and let you know if you don't have new parts by then. I tend to agree with Howard on the rebuild theory; if you do it yourself, you'll know what's in there.

    I have a complete one as well. I would order the small parts/bearing kit no matter what ($100), but not any gears.

    I have a rebuilt T90 that I dropped dirt on the inside of by mistake, and it would not bother me to pull it apart for parts.
