Ignition Timing with Buick V6

About 4 years ago there was a discussion on one of the Jeepster Boards about an oddity with Odd-Fire ignition timing being off. It seemed that the engines of many Buick V6 owners were timing at about 40 degrees BTDC. I found this strange because never had it happen to me with a 225 with a point driven ignition. BUt now I have a 1975 231 with a HEI dist-- that is doing the exact same thing. It runs best when I time it at about 40 degrees before top of dead center. This seems incredible! I have not tuned a V6 engine with a timing light since around 1988 and they were always a point driven dist too---- and Now days I am using a HEI dist.

Could this be a low octane gasoline issue or what? Or is a difference due to a HEI dist?

Where are your Buick V6 engines timing these days?

Anyone else having this timing issue?

5* BTDC timed with vacuum gauge (~19"hg) 35* total advance.

    HEI.

    Thanks-

I am changing distributors-- I have two OFs and a EF HEI-- I may have up mixed an OF and EF

And a couple of old point dists off of old 225s.R) if all else fails before pulling the timing chain cover.....
