new alternator for my 74 cj5

I took my old alt into Auto Zone and traded it for a new valucraft. When I got back to my jeep with the alt I realize that the wiring for the new is not the same as the wiring for the old especially with the voltage reg and I'm not sure how to get it all wired correctly Can you help?

Here is what I have so far. The vr (voltage reg) has two pluggable leads comming from it, one two pronged and one single pronged. The new alt has a plug for the two pronged plug but nothing for the single pronged one. Where should that be plugged to now?
Secondly: the back of the alternator has four screw down terminals. one is larger than the others and painted red. I assume this goes to the starter solenoid to charge the battery?. Do the other terminals need to be connected to anything?

I "think" you have to have the indicator lamp hooked up for the Delco 10SI type alternator to properly charge the battery, is'nt that right? I'm in the middle of adding a new one to my 304.

 

My 74 has the motorola alt so that diagram is not correct. I got a 55 amp alt and correct voltage regulator from NAPA. everything hooked right up!

 

Actually, according to the 1974 Factory Service Manual,
In '74 the I-6 engine used the Delco 10 SI series internally regulated alternator.
The V-8 used the Motorola externally regulated alternator.

Don't ask me why, it was a 'Jeep' thing!

The orignal poster is describing the Motorola alternator with the 'Charge Pack' regulator attached to the back of the alternator as near as I can tell...
If we knew what engine he had it would help things considerably.

 

If you do a little research, you can determine exactly what you need for amps, and then search the internet for a one wire alternator. The only drawback for a high output alternator is that it will make standard batteries boil over and leak fluid, so I went with a Optima dry cell. Doc

 

I got a 74 also I took the motorola out and put Delco it . I cut the bottom with a hacksaw so it fit the bracket . cut two wire and hook them to the Delco.The red to bat on the delco and green to delco plug and it has been working great . the amp lamp is in the dash and working . I got all the infor on the internet .

 

Cookieman, I did the same this past weekend, except the bracket part was an issue. What exactly did you do? Do they make a DelcoRemy bracket cheap that I could put on or was the cut job you did on the bracket? I still need to do this so any feedbacy (anyone?) would be helpful. I think I need to shave about 1/4 inch off the top of the bracket, add some washers to the bottom. I had a very good friend make me a 3 inch (vs. 2 inch) dowel out of bar stock, it rocks! So, beware of that when swapping out a Motorola to Delco alternator.

I've been waiting for it to cool off around here to re-wire and the old Motorola has gotta go. I have a Delco CS130 that will be replacing it. I did a search on the web and found a couple options for the lower bracket issue. One was to split the old F bracket apart and fit it for the Delco and weld it back together. The other was to get a GM F-bracket and drill the holes to fit the the factory holes in the block using the old bracket for a template. The GM F brackets are about 12 bucks in chrome.
