Replacing Head gasket on F134

    I have the head pulled off and right now I am cleaning up the surfaces and will be checking for flatness. When I am reassembling this what do I need to watch out for besides proper torque amount and in the proper sequence.

    Just replaced the head gasket and torqued the bolts down. Now I need to adjust the intake valves. Once I have found top dead center I adjust the first rocker so it is just tight against the intake valve stem. My question is what do I do now that I have one set. How do I set the next three. thanks.

    No, not tight. Top dead center on the compression stroke, and .018 clearance. Do the same for the other three. TDC compression stroke each cylinder and adjust/set clearance. That's the proper way.

    Got the jeep put back together and it still emits a white cloud. Doesn't seem to be as bad as before. Coolant seems to be leaking from the valve/rocker arm cover at the top of the cylinder head. I am wondering if it could be leaking up through the threads. I checked the head and block for cracks and didn't see any. I am about to give up and take it to a shop. This is so depressing.

    Try some Permatex aviation sealer on each head bolt before you give up. ;)

    Also check the exhaust manifold bolts a few of the also "dip" into the water jacket and tend to leak.

    dohc281 It is what it is.

    Wouldn't they leak outside the exhaust manifold and not the exhaust pipe?

    Not necessarily. Remember, we are talking about 40+ year-old iron castings that were far from precise when they were new...

    Turns out I was just burning out what was already in the exhaust pipe and muffler. I was gone for a week and talked to a friend who worked on HMMVW's in the army and he said that after the head gasket is changed there could still be fluid in the exhaust and in the muffler and that I should run it some more. Thanks for the help everyone. Now that this is done I have about 2 days before something else breaks. :rofl:
