Sideview Mirrors

I was just reading the hinge thred where we were identifying the types of hinges and I have decided to start a thread on what style sideview mirrors you all have. Maybe this will be something else we can add to the identification page. I have seen the round ones and the square ones. I have also seen JEEPs with only a driver side mirrow and then I have seen the mirrors on both sides. What do you all have and what is the year? Is there a difference between the M38A1 and the CJ5?

As for me, I have a small round mirror only on the driver's side. That is a R1 built in Oct. '69. (I am not 100% sure it is original.)

 

Roundies, non-telescoping stems, both sides, 73. Attached to front of the bottom hinge half like the later CJ mirrors are. Can't be sure they're stock but they're certainly not recent replacements. Extent of mirror corrosion seems consistent with the rest of the Jeep. Objects in mirror are just about as close as they appear (not concave like late model autos).

 

I have a round mirror on the drivers side, but I'm the one who installed it. I don't think any of the PO's every used one.

 

Thats funny I just came here to ask this question. My 68 has a square mirror on it but i am pretty sure that my dad updated the mirror from the original. Does anyone know what style mirror came on a 68 CJ5. If it was a round one does anyone know if you can buy them new, or where to fiind used ones?

M38a1's had the mirror arm mounted to the cowl. There was a flat spot stamped in the cowl for this purpose. I have some hinges with the mirror mount holes on both sides and some with them only on the driver's side. Be interesting to find out whether it was a year change or an option for passenger mirror. Nickmil

 

What's wrong with the aftermarket round mirrors? I was just about to order some for my 5, maybe I shouldn't?

 

'75, square with some stick on round fisheyes in the corner. Mirrors on both sides which makes me street legal since I don't have a rearview mirror

 

My '73 had the black rectangular mirrors, and the '75 had the square ones with the bulged-out sides. For both, the right mirror was a factory option.

 

X2 on avoiding the cheap replacements. Having gotten one myself, I would now gladly have cleaned up an old one instead. But, my JEEP had no mirrors when I got it, and I didn't know any better at the time. My cheapy also had the wrong mounting bracket - didn't match the holes in the windshield hinge. I ended up mounting it on the flat spot on the cowl where the M38A1s had them. It looks okay, but vibrates so much as to make it useless on the road.

By the way, my JEEP (a 1962 model) only had holes in the driver's side windshield hinge to mount a mirror.

 

Walck's sells a heavy duti round mirror. All the other vendors sell the cheap ones(towed my 3b to the hunting club and it ripped off just by the wind--holes did not match up either) The walck's version comes in od green but is easily painted -- i have been very pleased with it and it fit original holes

 

Okay, so far we dont have enough information to set a date with types of mirros although it really looks like the later models (71 and up) have the square mirrors from the factory. I really think that passenger side mirrors were only considered options during this whole time frame. I can see where a lot of people would convert over to a square mirror from a round one because after trying to use the round ones, I can say that they are very very difficult to see out of at times due to such a small size. I have two questions for the forum then... Can we get some more info on the mirrors you have and for what year? Especially those of you with round mirrors? Also, could someone look to find out what year it became mandatory to have a passenger side mirror?

 

My '59 CJ5 had a 6 in round mirror on the drivers side. But, the poor thing was badly losing its silver and the backing was 1/4 rusted all the way through. I have searched in vain for a plain round 6 inch replacement, but have only found the more current square, or convex, or cheap 5 in replacements. Although I am still searching.....;

 

Interesting discussion on mirrors. Check the Jeeps pictured at the top of your pages and you will see 3 different styles.
As I had discussed in another posting, 1974 used two different styles I remember my 1972 model had the rectangular one. Earlier ones used the round mirror.
Other sides like 2A,3A,3B will show literature showing mirrors.
