CJ5 FUEL Level Gauge

My 69 Dauntless CJ5 under seat fuel tank is leaking so a new tank is on order. While at it I want to put a new fuel gauge in my dash that will work with my sending unit. The sending unit I have is the locking ring version. I found a gauge that looks interesting. Has anybody tried it on an earlier CJ?

Is your new tank coming with a new sender? If so it should list the ohm range of the sender. I'm sure someone here knows the range on your stock unit. As far as the Autometer gauges, in my opinion they are the best made and worth the money. Summit Racing will have the best prices.

Thanks, my sending unit is fairly new so I'm just going to use the one I have for the new tank. It was the stock sending unit replacement. Is the ohm range on the sending unit some where? I agree on the Autometer units. I already have the oil pressure, volts, and temp installed made by them. I want to get rid of the stock speedo unit as I'm on my third one and they are junk. I use my GPS for speed anyway and my CJ is just used offroad. I found a fiberglass replacement dash for $50 so am planning on making everything as clean as possible. My old dash is full of all kinds of holes and cutouts. Yes Summit has a good price $35.95.

You can remove the sender and check the resistance when full and empty (float all the way up and down).

Ummmm I am a total klutz as far as electronics are concerned. How do I test it? I have a digital voltmeter that has ohms on it but I've never used that function.

Set the meter to ohms. Connect the positive lead to the sender output connector and connect the negative lead to the sender's metal flange.

If I may add.. you can also use the meter itself as a fuel guage, I did for five years on my Diplomat. I also noticed that after some heavy cornering the float would stick half way then drop. They have digital meters and I may be able to figure out how to get the guage to go between zero and 100 through your range of ohms for your tank. Then you would have a digital fuel guage.

I just adjusted my fuel gauge yesterday. It would run out of gas at 1/4 tank. I had to do a little bending of the arm. Now it to read right.

I am trying to figure out this compatabilty thing. The #4315 gauge I am looking at says it has a range of 73 ohms empty and 8-12 ohms full. My sending unit has several scales but on the 200 it reads 138.6 empty and 64.0 full on the 2k scale it reads .140 empty and .063 full. Could somebody interpret these numbers for me?

The 200 should be right. So all the way up your getting 64 and down your getting 138?

Yes, that is what I'm getting. How would I find a gauge that will work? The gauge I'm looking at is 73 mt and 8 full, can I just put a resistor of some kind into the line?

I have not been able to locate the ohm ranges you have displayed. Don't know if you have a problem with your sender or what. Since your replacing the tank I might just go ahead and replace the sender too (not too expensive) and then you'll know your good to go. I did find this pic (see attached) that leads me to believe that your stock sender should be the same one you need for the gauge you are planning to order. Sorry I couldn't be more help there.

That is a huge help, thank you so much. Now I know how to proceed.
