Floorboard and Frame Preservation

My JEEP has surface rust on the frame and floorboards. The floorboards have a little bit of rust-not through, but it has started. I will not be taking it apart any time soon - too busy driving it! Is there a good way to keep this from getting any worse? If so' what is involved? Can you get to enough of the frame to do any good?

As long as it's just surface rust, you can sand it off and seal it up with some kind of weatherproofer like Durabak.

Don't know anything about it personally, got the info here. Says you can get it at Ace Hardware.

 

I'd guess that Ospho is a rust convertor, similar to Naval Jelly. The principle ingredient is phosphoric acid, which reduces rust (red iron oxide, hematite) to black iron oxide (magnetite).

Surface rust indicates that the paint is failing; IMO all you need to do in that case is to stabilize and cover over the failing paint. I've had good results painting over rust with Eastwood's "Rust Encapsulator" - it's simply a paint designed to bind to and seal in the rust.

 

I used SEM's rust converter when I did mine, but I was painting/bedlining it shortly after.....

Oh, and moving to Arizona will help.

I've seen ospho is smaller containers, quarts maybe. It's worked well for me. Squirt bottles and brushes to spread, then wipe off the excess so it dries in a timely manner. Wear gloves.

 

I used POR 15. A little messy but the end result is clean and appears to be durable. Time will tell.

 

I think thats where my wife would draw the line!R)

 

Thanks for all the replies! I will check out these products and let you guys know which one I pick. Have any of you ever tried painting the frame while everything is still together? If so, what where your results? I don't think I can get to everything to sand or paint it.

Two more rust converter products: Extend (don't know source) and Miracle Paint from Bill Hirsch. I've used them both and they both work.

Of all the advice, I like the move to Arizona best. Maybe even Texas.

There isn't a state income tax in Texas, so that makes it good.

 

Used Extend for some time, works good. Made by permatex I think. Gotten hard to find here.

 

The Extend I use is Loctite (which I think is the same as permatex) and is avalable through Fastenal (www.fastenal.com) and about $110 a gallon or $33 for a spray can. http://www.fastenal.com/web/product...l&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&Ntpc=1&N=999601680

I love the stuff and have used a quarter of a gallon in 10 years.

 

FYI The miracle paint from Hirsch is $29/ qt. brush on. It's going up to $31/ qt. around the first of the year.

Man! Thats a lot of options! I'm gonna have to study on this a while. It's ok, I have plenty of time. I HAVE NO MONEY! Someone told me the other day JEEP stands for - Just Empty Every Pocket. Even though I hate to admit it,there may be some truth to that. I can't believe I said that! I hope my wife never reads this!
