Locking/Securing Your Jeep?

Hi guys,

Trying to clean up my garage, which means the Jeep might have to sleep outside for awhile.

Interested in how folks secure their Jeeps when left outside - honor system or something else?

I have a Tuffy console in my YJ.
It was broken into at the Sheriffs Office when I was Deputy of all places.
Hence the Tuffy now.
The CJ is in the shop still, but I just dont leave anything of value in either of them.

 

I have a hard top with locking doors, I also put a lock on the tailgate. And I have a brake line lock installed. Turn the key , step on the pedel, brakes are locked.

No driveline so if they want it they have to inflate the tires and push it out of my driveway.

 

I don't keep anything worth stealing in the Jeep (I pull the tools and loose gear into the house) except the stereo and the of course the Jeep itself. I put a plate under the dash and use silicon sealant on all fastener threads, makes them tough to remove, balls up and pisses of a would be robber. Pull the rotor out of the distributer. After that the honor system, and tie a rottweiler to the bumper!!

I'm not worried about stealing anything out of the Jeep - I'm more concerned that someone could easily steal the Jeep. I'm interested in securing the vehicle to prevent (deter) stealing the Jeep itself...

Block it in with another car/truck?

 

If the gas tank is still under the seat, install a fuel shut off valve inline and close it off. Also a batt shut off switch hidden some where. OH and leave it in low range 4wd with the hubs locked so it would be hard to push. Line locks on the brakes?

 

You can try removing a cable off the battery. And while you have the hood open, pop off the coil wire and take it with you. If you are running an electric fuel pump, install a kill switch or even better, take the fuse for the fuel pump out. If the jeep is going to be outside for more than a couple of days, take off the steering wheel.

 

I park mine in the street and have nothing in it of value. If it gets stolen, oh well. I might be stupid but I can't imagine anyone stealing my Jeep. It's too ugly.

 

I used to pull the rotor and reinstall the dist cap so it looked good just wouldn't fire. chain it to a easily installed anchor in the ground. Just use a PHD to dig a hole about 3 ft deep and put a bent metal hoop in the concrete, chain it to that. Just remember if they want it they will get it one way or another.

 

When I rewired Old Bill, I installed a ignition "short" switch that shorts the hot to the ignition to ground. Even if they hotwire it, it won't go.

I also use a pedal lock that I made. It is a long loop of 1/4" bar stock that loops under the brake and clutch pedals and a long piece of bar stock goes over the gas pedal. There is a "leg" that extends to the floor of the Jeep, and a long MasterLock keeps it in place in such a way to make it difficult to cut the lock.

lock the doors. leave nothing of value. move the coil wire just inside of boot to prevent driving away.











OH, forgot...........is a stick (big turnoff on the local joyriders)

Thanks for all the ideas guys! Most likely I'm being paranoid, I'm sure folks would rather steal the neighbors Mercedes or the others Ferarri.

I'm sure I can come up with something that will work for me from all the ideas!

When I was driving my Jeep to college I was chaining and locking the steering wheel to the seat bracket. Someone isn't likely to spend a lot of time trying to steal a vehicle, so basically you just need to really inconvenience them and they'll leave it alone.
