11" Brake Problems On My '62

    OK, I've searched and haven't come across anything like this, so I guess I need some help...

    The previous owner replaced the front brakes on the JEEP with 11" self-adjusting drums. I was talking with him yesterday and mentioned it was pulling a little to the right. This was when he told me that he did the brake swap. So he told me the back up and brake thing to adjust the fronts. So today as I was leaving work I finally had a chance to try it as the parking lot was pretty empty.

    So, after stopping, I drive forward again and there was no pulling. At first I was very happy, but as I drove it a little more this evening, I noticed that the brake pedal had a lot more travel. I wasn't too concerned because while I had to push farther down, it was still stopping. Well fast-forward to after it sat for 3 hours... I just tried to drive it and the brake pedal went all the way to the floor, and the JEEP just wouldn't stop...

    So, any ideas? There wasn't a problem before I tried to get them to self-adjust, and now I have no brakes. There's no leaking fluid that I could find, and right now I'm not in a position to be able to pull things apart. Anything else easy I can check before I have to bring it in to have someone take a look at it?

    Jack the front end up so you can spin the wheels.

    When you spin them the brakes should drag lightly.

    If they don't you can use a brake adjuster (most people use a large flat blade screwdriver) at the bottom of the backing plate there's a plug you can remove and spin the adjuster out to see if it will fix it.

    Thanks everyone... MC wasn't dry, but no visible fluid, either. Topped it off, pumped the pedal a few times, buttoned it up and...

    Plus side:
    I have brakes again!

    Minus side:
    It's pulling right again... but that I can handle until I can dig in further.

    I'm sure it does need to be bled...
    Unfortunately I lease a spot in a parking garage to have a place for the JEEP (no guaranteed parking for me otherwise) and I don't want to get caught doing "mechanical work" on it or I could lose my spot.
    I'll be sure to get it wrapped up. At this point, some brakes are better than none, and it's actually better than when I got the JEEP a week ago.
