Freeze Plugs Removed - Yuk

    Hello. We are restoring a 1968 Jeep with the orig. Buick V6 engine. It has been sitting idle for ten years. Most everything is now back in working order, but it overheats. We've tried everything and have now popped the freeze plugs. Inside, there is much corrosion and a sandy substance. How can we get this out? Is there any hope?? Thank you. Linda

    Pop all of the plugs out and take a garden hose to it.

    We have removed two, but the others are so hard to get to. Would you recommend putting a solvent through the system? If so, what kind? Also, I hear there is a rust inhibitor we can flush through the system as well.

    I think at this point I'd visit a radiator shop and ask what they recommend. If you have a bunch of loose stuff it's gonna plug the radiator so disconnect that first and have the radiator shop clean it while it's out. I'd also remove the thermostat for flushing purposes.

    Thanks for your replies. We did remove the thermostat and that seemed to really help with removal of all the gak. We are ready to begin the reconstruction (radiator was already removed and has been cleaned). I appreciate all your help.
