Auxiliary/secondary Throttle ?

    I thought I read a post on here about someone adding an auxiliary throttle that would add throttle when needed like loading on trailer etc, but searched and found nothing.

    What I have done so far is successfully added the throttle handle on gear shift stock where I can use my thumb or finger to throttle up while my other two clubs are on the brake and clutch. I had it working but was jankeee at best. I used a thumb throttle and cable for a motorcycle 50" in length, ran it through the shift boot and routed up along the bell housing to where foot throttle connects to carb.

    The problem I am having is a decent/nice way to attach to throttle on carb. The cable itself has a bigger lead ball on one end that goes to the thumb control and this works fine, the other end has a very small lead ball as you would expect for a motorcycle type of cable.

    Anybody have ideas on how to connect to carb, there is another hole in throttle of carb that a #10 screw fits in that I could use, just trying to figure out a decent way to connect to throttle on carb

    upload_2024-1-17_18-6-48.png I also purchased this where my plan was to install the end with the hole to something like the #10 screw from the throttle, but can't decide how to attache the small ball end of the cable to this. This is actually a Johnson outboard motor throttle connect. I thought about soldering it but may melt the plastic cover. Epoxy?

    Will the cable ball go inside the threaded cable end? if not maybe grind the ball down enough it will just slip in then cross drill the cable end just behind the ball so to install a small roll pin to keep it in place.

    The cable end with the threaded portion screws into the thumb throttle and that is not the problem. The other end where the very small end on the cable(probably not bigger than 1/8") is what I am stumbling with trying to find an idea to attach to something to go to the carb throttle.

    On classic British motorcycles we used to replace those cable ends. The end of the cable would be flared out inside the fitting, then filled with solder.

    You could put any kind of end you want on your cable. For instance, a threaded fitting for your plastic eye termination.

    Right. a brass screw drilled longitudinally will solder nicely. Make it long enough to accept a jam nut.

    Generally, what you want is for the bracket on the carb to move independently of the cable. This keeps the cable from kinking if it is fixed to the carb.
    You can drill a hole or cut a slot in the linkage plate and thread the cable through it so the cable slides inside.

    Yes. I did something similar on my '71. I made a pivot by welding a tube to the head of a bolt:

    We you push the gas pedal and apply more throttle than the cable, the cable doesn't move. My cable is solid core, so I had to do this:

    It's also pretty common to use a small chunk of lamp-pull type chain for the task. It can pull, but it can't be pushed.

    Fireball, I like that idea where you are "pulling" from front of carb instead of back. That would accomplish a better way where it would be independent from main throttle and would accomplish what JeepDaddy said above. I need to verify if my 50" cable is long enough to go up and turn around back to the front of carburetor. It does have the "unused" pull down lever on this 2150 that I believe would work great. Appreciate the pics.

    Mine does do a big loop under the hood. It did make packaging everything much easier:

    I did a locking push/pull knob on the dash. It works fine, but if I did it again, I think I might do the shifter mount setup:

    Every time I see that Buick V8 under your hood, I have to :drool;.
    I thought I would make the same mod to mine, but the remanufactured stock V6 made sense.
    I had a 350 Buick Riviera in high school with a 2:41 axle ratio...dang that car could FLY!!! :D

    It's a torque monster. I have the idle set to 400rpm and with a 54:1 crawl ratio, it actually crawls slower than my TJ Rubicon with it's 70:1 crawl ration and computer controlled 750rpm idle. It will easily lug down to 200rpm over and obstacle and keep going.

    I've got 3.73s with OD and that Buick 350 loves chugging down the highway doing 1800rpm at 60mph. It's a great Jeep motor.

    I installed a locking throttle knob in the dash just below the speedo. It has a stiff wire that runs to the back of the engine, and then it’s connected to the carb throttle linkage with a small chain. Reason for the chain is that I needed something that could pull the throttle, but was also flexible so it wouldn’t interfere with the foot throttle.

    it works great. I use the foot throttle to get to the desired RPM, twist the throttle knob to unlock, pull toward me until I feel resistance, twist again to lock, remove my foot and it holds the rpm steady until I unlock.

    A popular set up is a bicycle hand brake or derailer shifter mounted to the shifter. It allows throttle control with the finger(s) of the shifting hand.

    Summit Racing has this kit reasonably priced. When I changed carbs I replaced my cable with a $6 one from the local bike store.

    Another vote for the Terraflex hand throttle located on the shifter.
    Dash mounted hand throttle is more for setting high idle when warming an engine, jump starting ect.....
    In wheeling situations where a hand throttle is needed, the last thing I want to have to do is reach/lean forward to the dash to turn off the throttle.
    The shifter handle location is a muscle memory location, you don't have to look at it to find it.

    one more vote for the terraflex kit on the shifter. Feel silly paying that much for cheap bike parts, and it doesn't look very vintage, but it's easy. I tried to source my own from my local bike store, and they didn't carry anything like it since bike shifters are completely different now.
    My first set up had two mistakes:
    1) it was on the steering column and awkward to use. moving it to the shifter cane I can manipulate it with my fingers, while shifting.
    2) it terminated on the firewall, so when the engine or body twisted, the throttle would change. Moved it to the block and much better.
