Disc Brake Install!

This past weekend I began mocking up my Brennan's disc brake mod. I removed the old hubs with drums, brake lines as required. Also removed the hoses and hose guards for new hose clearance issues.
removed both spindles to see which axles it came with. Rt side has a Bendix and Lt side has a Spicer type axle. Temp installed spindles to fit the Bracket to hold the caliper and get it clocked correctly. Loosely bolted up caliper, while waiting for bolt kit from Brennan's garage and longer wheel studs from FLAPS, I used the dorman 610-034 studs. they will be long enough for the rotor and the thick centered Jackman rims that will be going on this jeep. Still need to replace the axle to frame flex hose and replace the axle brake lines. Still need to ream the lug stud holes in the rotors a bit so they slide on just before I slide on the tires/ rims
Sorry for the sore neck after looking at pics

No knuckle pudding? Do the axle u-joints have grease fittings?

Straight 90wt out of the RT side, NADA out of the LT, going to fill the left before the road test. thinking of changing to greaseables and greasing up the knuckle bearings too

Finished up the L/H side over the weekend, waiting for the spicer axle coming today to swap out the Bendix on the R/H side. Then install and finish Disc brake install on Dana 25. 20220320_133726.jpg 20220320_133735.jpg 20220320_133711.jpg

Are the spacers between the caliper bracket and caliper mount welded in place or did they come separated?

They come separate. I have the same kit on my 2a, purchased before I knew R&P carries a 1/4 ton kit...

So similar to the SSBC kit. sorry but not a fan. I’d suggest welding the spacers In Place. A couple simple tack welds should be sufficient but solid weld around would be best. More pieces like that mean more possibility of the fasteners coming loose. I’ve seen it happen on the SSBC kits. That’s why the R&P kits are braked and don’t use spacers.

    Locktite works just fine.

Ouch on the prices for the SSBC kits.

I agree on the SSBC kits

I’m guessing you mean threadlocker? Loc-tite is a brand not a product.
It’s more than just fasteners coming loose. More movement in brake components means more likelihood of brake noise and degraded performance. Plus more chance of losing parts during service. A few simple tack welds would eliminate all these issues plus more. The kit looks well built and well thought out. Why not simply go one more step and eliminate a myriad of potential issues? GM did and look how many people use their parts or designed parts to do conversions with zero issues.

I used Brennen's brackets on all four wheels on my 2a. While tacking the spacers may provide a little more security, I haven't experienced any issues. I just used Loctite and the correct torque on the bolts. In any events if you use Brennens kit on the rear, I'd wait until you had everything set up before tacking the spacers. I had to even out the shim stacks and shave the spacers a little on the rear to keep the pads from dragging due to the axle shims on that particular D44.

Looking good, I'm taking notes for when i do my conversion.

How do the bends of the brake hose look when the steering is turned hard left? Can the banjo bolt connection be repositioned so the hose goes straight up from the caliper...if needed?

I probably need to tweak the welded mount bracket to align more with the axle. With the S10 brake banjo the hose will not turn 90 deg but the caliper could be modified to allow , you'd have to grind off the restrictions that prevent it from being turned.
I have been used to 11" brakes for the last twenty years, so it will be good to compare them to my CJ3B

The hose is almost flexed out with it as shown when turned. My 48 has 9" inch brakes so the discs have been a welcome improvement so far. Later this summer the rear axle will get modded also.

Completed the rear axle installation last month, had to reduce the spacer thickness on each side due to axle shim pack thicknesses. Don't forget to predrill the grease drain hole in the caliper bracket using the bearing retainer for a template. My 1st pair of rotors I drilled the lug holes too big and had an issue with the rotor not being centered by the lug bolts or the short axle shoulder, ordered another pair and they fit on fine with a dead bolt hammer lightly persuading them. The rotors have a bevel on the backside that keep them from centering on the short rear axle shoulders. The front hubs do not have that issue. Love the new stopping power they offer. I can now tailgate the new cars if I want to.

Use studs in the back of the knuckle instead of the bolts
