    I have a 1970 CJ5 that has this mirror.

    2 questions:

1). Is this a stock mirror for this Jeep

    2) if it is stock, is it possible to fix the rusted out holes? The metal seems pretty thin.

Yes, it's stock. Most anything can be repaired with enough work, but you might be better off looking for a replacement.

Cover the backside with sign vinyl.

Yes, this mirror was used through mid '74. Jeep PN 979383, which is a number from the late-60s-ish, so I'd expect it's right for a '70.

Fixing it is just like body work. Not sure how easy or hard it would be to remove the glass. It's probably held in by a crimp of the steel around its perimeter. The rubber edge comes off, and would hide a lot of damage to the edge if you can't remove the glass cleanly. With the glass out, you can ding out the dents and fill the holes. I would use a glass-fiber filled putty like Duraglas. Sand and paint. A lot of work could be avoided if you can find a replacement in better condition.

Try Barney's Jeep Parts. My brother in law bought one of these mirrors from Barney a few years ago (NOS) - maybe he still has some in stock.

Jeepsterman used to have a few (or more) of these mirrors a couple years back, and they were cheap.

Thanks for the sources. I’ll check them out.

  9. We have them NOS. Prices will depend on the components needed. He has the mount block, gasket, and hardware already which will help as these are pricey. These mirrors were used on 69 - 75 CJ and Commando with a different mounting block.
Look us up and give us a call if we can help. - Barney

Thanks for everyone’s suggestions and comments.

I was able to locate a NOS replacement as well as the 5x8 drivers side mirror as shown in this photo I found in the historical photo archives forum.

Glad to hear you found what you need Dale!

Where did you find the side mirror? Does it look correct? I've got an arm and mount, but need a new side mirror head.

Got it from Barney’s Jeep Parts from the info above. Great guy to work with. Very knowledgeable.

    $35.00

I need to paint it black but it looks correct to me.

haven’t received it yet but here’s a pic he sent of the one I bought.

Does anyone have a good photo of where that model rear view mirror is mounted on a later, curved glass windshield frame?

Here’s where mine is mounted. For reference, the footman loop that the strap is attached to is dead center of the windshield.

Thanks for that. Something is different on mine, not sure what. The mirror bracket and arm hit the windshield rubber about a half inch before the frame. Maybe it's my super awesome Omix windshield frame? Or am I missing a spacer of some sort?

This is a terrible picture but hopefully you can get an idea of what mine looks like from the side.

Thanks, that is helpful. It appears you have a slightly different mounting bracket, unless that's just an illusion of camera angle. More depth in the section the screws go through. I should be able to fabricate a spacer for that area.
My mirror was recovered from a flat top glass windshield where the windshield rubber wouldn't interfere. They must have changed the design when they went to curved top windshields.

This is an observation I hadn't noticed before. I have both types in my '69 and '71 but always thought the mirrors were the same. I went out to the shop and measured them for reference.

The '69 is about .400" inches this where the screws are:

And the '71 is about .570" thick where the screws are:

Interesting discovery. Your idea of a spacer should work fine.

    @Fireball

Can you provide a pic of the sun visors on your ‘71?

    I’m assuming those are stock?
