I'm having a tough time finding new head bolts for the AMC 4.2L in my '74 CJ‐5. Does anyone know where I can order some? I would like to reassemble and paint the engine soon

What I saw on headbolts.com was a set of 14, 7-long and 7-short in 7/16" size, are yours 7/16" or 1/2" and they do mention the kit may not have the stud for valve cover/accessories.

    Their descrption:
L6 4.2 liter (258) jeep 7/16 thread bolts 7 long 4.5 uhl 7 short 3.750 arp bolts with arp cylinder head washers please check thread sizes before ordering these do not have studs on top that may be needed for valve cover / accessory's for example casting numbers 89330000 we have found that in some cases model 4.2 may use the 1/2 thread bolts

torque is 70 foot pounds done in three steps 30 55 then 70 ft pounds with arp lube included in kit. Cylinder head washer goes inner chamfer side up

They do show a kit with 1/2" bolts that does have the 2-stud bolts. Their part # is chbs-1128. You will need to verify!

Why do you want new ones? Unless the TSM tells me to replace them, I would reuse the old ones.

Yes, there are some years with 7/16" bolts and some with 1/2". Depends on the year.

I went out to the shop and measured the head bolts, they are as follows:

Quantity 10: 1/2" diameter, 3-3/4" long from top of head

Quantity 3: 1/2" diameter 3-5/8" long from top of head with top threaded part 7/16" diameter 1" long

I wouldn't be averse to reusing them, if it's not a bad idea. However I bought this Jeep out of my neighbor's field where it had been sitting for over twenty years, so I don't know its history.

    nickmil In mothballs.

Unless they are torque to yield bolts which is unlikely in this year, or they are damaged somehow, no reason to not reuse the original bolts. Common and accepted practice.

Make sure both bolts and block are cleaned well. Even can run a tap and die on them to be sure.
