    Hello All!
Wow RockAuto is fast. They must have a warehouse near me. Ordered brake drums yesterday, got ‘em today!

Question is, do you guys paint brake drums and hubs?
    Why/why not?

I sand blasted and painted my backing plates and other small parts that weren’t replaced, with high temp bbq paint. I was planning on the same for drums and hubs before deciding to replace them.

As always, look forward to your thoughts!

    Thanks,
    Andy

ETA, I live in a coastal environment. I am pretty sure a Pelican’s butt would rust here if it is not cleaned and oiled…

    I paint them.
The drums get Rust-Oleum Black BBQ and the backing plates, hubs, etc get Rust-Oleum black semi-gloss.
I like the clean look of carefully painted hardware and its easier to clean mud or road grime from the painted surface, I personally don't like the "rust patina" look.

I'm interested to hear other's take on this. I never do, but always hate the way it looks in short order. I'd love to hear some definitive rationale why I should do this....

My mag slot wheels show quite a bit of the drums through the slots...initially I didnt paint the drums (I did paint the backing plates etc), and after a couple years, the rust colored drums were a bit of an eye-sore behind the nice wheels. I've now painted them black, although I debated a grey of some type to match the the wheels, but figured the black would help provide more 'shadow' in the window slots. In other words, I painted the drums for purely aesthetic reasons, not function.

If I go in and build this stuff, I paint it all.

    boopiejones I can’t drive 55

I just pulled one of my front drums apart to replace a leaky wheel cylinder, and it looks like the entire brake system has been sitting at the bottom of the ocean for a couple decades. I’m in a relatively dry climate. Northern CA, not coastal. So my vote would be to paint everything.

I paint things just on the general principle of I Hate Rust.

It's also a lot easier, at least psychologically, to work on them later on if things are nice & clean, or at least easily cleaned.

I was wondering what my dog was barking at the other night…
Clearly it was you in my driveway taking pictures of my brakes!

Does the BBQ paint require heat curing? I find it very inconvenient to have to wait until the wife leaves to bake my parts in the oven.

You forgot to paint the brake shoes (in red) (y)
Long ago, there was some oil on the Norton brake shoes that I was driving.
At the 1 st stop on my road, the feeling was intense... absolutely no brakes!:censored:
But, no car at the time on the road!

I use Dupli-Color Cast Iron Paint so it still looks like cast iron, but without the rust.

Here are the instructions I followed.

"Sprays: Dries to touch in 30 minutes and to handle in 1-2 hours. Allow paint to dry for 1 hour before heating. In order to achieve full cure, the coating must be heat cured at 450ºF for one hour. Product may emit smoke and harmless odor."

I can fit two drums at a time in my propane grill
