Dauntless Ran A Little Hot Any Tips

Discussion in 'Early CJ5 and CJ6 Tech' started by Montgomery J Yarbrough, Aug 11, 2021.

  1. After two years of a lot of work, I took my jeep rockcrawling it did great but about a 2 mile stretch of nothing but steep rocky incline my jeep was running a little hot 218 degrees f I have the buick 225 everything is new. I have read a bigger crank pulley from a buick 350 or 455 would help but after looking theirs multiple one so any suggestions would be appreciated. Other than that steep incline and I mean steep with massive builders it ran 204 degrees

RATTYFLATTY I think you need a little more throttle

What fan/shroud setup are you running? This is where you can capitalize on system efficiency for slow trail speeds. I run a 7 blade fan and clutch setup off a Wag, is moves a lot of air. It will rob some power but it never gets hot.

Scott had a hot running engine on the Rubicon. I think it was a lean carburetor.

I just added a shroud to mine after the last Rubicon trip and it made a significant difference, even with the original 4 blade fan.

X3 on a close-fitting shroud on the radiator.

    What year? Stock radiator?
Every earlier v6 I ever had with the smaller rad, I had problems keeping them cool. The change to a bigger radiator in 68? 69? was a smart move by Kaiser.

I am sort of in Rattyflatty's camp but I don't even use a clutched fan. Install the largest six+ fixed blade fan that will fit and absolutely use a well fit shroud. Yep, it will cost you a little power and economy but that's not too big a deal with a 225 and in a Jeep that presumably doesn't see a lot of highway miles. In my 3B, I also had a custom water pump pulley machined to speed the pump/fan up 15%.

And if you have not already done so, throw a bottle of water wetter in the radiator. The stuff does work. I typically use Red Line.

Yep, a good shroud makes a noticeable difference. I’m running a shroud, 6-blade fan and a “hi-flow” 180° thermostat. Haven’t had any overheating issues.

Get a shroud if you don't have one. I purchased a fiberglass one from Parts Dude.

I made a shroud out of a piece of tin and installed a 7 bladed fan off an early F350. It will pull at my coveralls at idle when I stand in front of the grill. In retrospect it is a bit overkill but the temps have never been an issue during technical wheeling.
BTW, big fans can be really noisy at highway speeds.

Shrouds can be fabricated out of all sorts of stuff. I've seen fiberglass, steel, and aluminum. Some applications take a little effort to fit but a stock 225 Jeep should be straight forward. As noted above, you can probably find a stock replacement but that will likely limit your fan selection. Flex-a-lite has are relatively large selection of belt driven fans.

My 3B is sporting the last one in that selection, # 106285

A simple shroud and 6 blade 15” fan will have you running at 185 all day long and not rob nearly as much hp.

I switched to the shroud, fan, and clutch off of a Volvo 740, there's a thread about the parts needed here somewhere. Works great.
