What is this spare bolt hole for?

Could it be a hold over from the L134 intake manifold?

Isn't that hole used on the L134 for the intake?

Makes sense, must be L-head related.

I can't specifically remember what were in the holes. All I had left were 2 studs. I think I'll use hex head bolts instead of the studs.

My F Head has them, never noticed, Does not leak antifreeze. I assume like others said, must be left over from an L Head casting.

I don't think a left over from the L134 casting would explain the hole being drilled and tapped.

Interesting to me that my 67 F Head does not seem to have the hole, unless it is filled in with crud and I couldn't see it. I have some pretty bad oil leaks from the rocker and valve covers. So I am about to pull those, adjust the valves and replace the gaskets. I will take a closer look when I clean it up for that work.

Odd that they would tap holes that aren't used, as they would have benefitted from eliminating those steps in the manufacture.

My '60 has one at each end, tapped but not all the way into the inside of the block.

I have them as well, if they're not L head leftovers then they seem remarkably well place to hold an L head intake manifold.

Yes curious but they were still producing l heads up to the mid 60's at least, could be they just left them there because it was cheaper than setting up a separate boring operation for the F head, or at least that part of it.

I do see the military version seems to have some sort of widget using the forward spot-

That might be a bracket holding the pcv line and associated fording valve for pressuring the crankcase for running in water. The lever is cable operated. Lever is that piece at an angle.
