Do I Have The Right Harmonic Balancer?

Hey all I’m getting ready to replace the harmonic balancer on the Jeep and the new one is a little different from the old one so I want to make sure the new one is gonna work. 1973 Jeep cj5 with a 258 from an ‘84. The bottom edge on the new one is alot thicker than the old one. But they both sit the same height off of the table(about 1/2 inch) 6A115B47-9AEB-489B-8DE1-88C49E268BB3.jpeg

Pulley groove is not same location. Will cause a misalignment of fan belt. This causes premature belt wear.

Hmm where do I find a replacement like the original? All the ones I can find online look like the one I bought.

Put it on and see if it mounts correctly. Lining up with the rest of the works.

When I needed a new dampener, I had to use the casting number on the balancer itself to make sure I got the right one. You might check with a place called Damperdudes as they rebuild them and may have a rebuilt one for you if you can provide the casting number off of yours.

I used the same replacement that you have. I put a few spacers behind the fan to move that pulley forward and I made a new alternator bracket so that lined up as well.

One other problem is that the timing mark will be in the wrong place. To fix this, hollow out a spark plug and jam a bolt into it. About 2 inches long. Wrap some duct tape around the top of the bolt to make sure it doesn't mar any surfaces.

Thread the spark plug with the bolt into the # 1 cylinder. Hand turn the engine all the way clockwise until the bolt hits the top of the piston. Mark the spot on the damper to match 0* timing. Then crank the engine around the other direction all until the bolt hits the top of the cylinder. Mark that spot. Half way between those two spots is exactly top dead center. Make a new permanent mark there.

Be sure the bolt is very secure in the hollowed out spark plug. I put a couple tack welds on mine. Also make sure any duct tape you use for cushioning is secure. You don't want to drop anything into that cylinder.

Did you look at this suggestion? They show a single belt damper for a 258 that to me anyway, looks like yours.
