Set Of 'must Get' Mill And Lathe Items

    I don't have a lot of room either. I tried to use all the space around the best I could. Custom cabinet above with a little shelf for keeping tools, etc. and a custom stand with hardware and large tool storage. The red shelf is a folding HF toolbox shelf that folds down flat.

    So now that I'm getting close to being allowed back in the shop to play, I have another question.

    If you could get, say, three books on running a mill and/or lathe, what would they be?

    Southbend's "How to run a lathe" but honestly I've learned a lot more watching videos on Youtube.

    I agree 100%

    The main thing you want to do before anything else is read the manual specific to your lathe. All these machines are a bit different and you want to make sure you understand it before you turn it on.

    Thanks - I've got the manuals and am going through them. Got both with DRO. Maybe overkill, but figured it was easier now than later. Once I start using them more I'll figure out what else I want to add to them.

    I put the DRO on my mill last year \and am very happy with it. And just finished up one for my lathe this weekend- been playing with it & My God what a difference o_O I just add/subtract the numbers to figure out where I need to be & that's where I end up at , usually within 1-2 thou & I'm not even used to the thing yet.

    I dont have DRO on my lathe. I rebuilt the cross feed so the dials work. I can see how it might improve my work, but there is not great places to mount it on this old lathe. Getting the machines with DRO is the way to go for sure.

    The mill otoh.. yeah, the quill mounted Z axis with X and Y readout is a must have. I need to layout bolt patterns for tooling and it makes life really easy. Also the Kurt vise is a dramatic improvement over the old Bridgeport vises. It also has a larger stock capacity.

    The addition of a knee power feed saves me a lot of time when I need to change out tooling from a milling operation to a drilling operation. The x and y power feeds make a nicer surface than manual as well.
