Buick V6 Question

I just scored a low mileage (14K) engine out of a 1985 Buick Regal for only $250 ! Car belonged to an elderly lady and wasn't used much. It still runs great.

I know I will need to replace the carburetor with an earlier version without the computerized control, and of course remove the smog pump and plug the holes for that in the heads.

I have a carburetor from a late 60s Dauntless engine which will need a kit, but should work fine, but wondering if anyone knows of any better options.

 

I'm personally a Motorcraft 2100 guy, if you're going to stay 2-bbl. Other guys have different ideas.

 

The main issues I see with the 2100 - there are few good cores out there anymore. The base is Holley 2V pattern, and you'll need an adapter from the small (?) Rochester pattern, either with the original iron manifold or with an aftermarket 4V manifold.

Some have used the Rochester DualJet, which I presume is a progressive 2V carb. It's billed as half of a Quadrajet. Looking at pictures, it looks like some are progressive and some not.

Sounds like a good opportunity to go EFI.

 

Agreed, I just happen to be a packrat, and I've got a box full of 2100's. I'm lucky that way.

EFI is definitely a great option.

I went out to the shed and looked at the manifold and carb for that older V6 I have, it is a Rochester with a two bolt flange so it won't work on this later model manifold which has a four bolt flange.

Did you have to use an adaptor for the Motorcraft 2100 ? I see these all over ebay and Amazon for very reasonable prices.

 

If it's a standard Holley Style 4-bolt flange, no, the MC2100 will bolt right up. If it's the smaller Rochester pattern, yes, you would need an adapter.

I am going to pick up the engine tomorrow, so will know more about what I have after I get it home.

A friend going with me builds a lot of Ford engines, mostly small block V8s. He buys old Ford Pickups to build as hot rods, and has a pile of the 2 barrel carbs he has removed. Should be able to find a rebuildable MC2100 when I stop to pick him up.

 

Stock Regal with the 3.8L will have the Rochester Dual-Jet with CCC.
Pretty simple carb, if it runs great why do you feel you need to replace it?
I rebuilt the older version of that carb (non CCC) on a small block Olds, added electric choke and it's never run better...

 

I need to replace it because it is computer controlled which I assume is what you mean by "CCC".

I won't have a computer on the 67 CJ5 this engine is going into. So, I either need to get the older version Rochester, or use something else.

The Rochester Dual-Jet for 1982 back would certainly work, but they are a lot more expensive than the MC2100. The MC2100 carbs are available for $60, the Rochester carbs are close to $400.

A friend of mine has a pile of old MC2100 carbs, so when we go to pick up the engine tomorrow I will get one from him and see if it fits the manifold on that Buick engine.

 

They are just the primary's non progressive. My 1st v6 in the jeep had a Chevy 200ci 3.3 v6 with one. I should have kept it on the 4.3
I never had to touch it.

I think this is the way to go. The QuadraJet is the best carb , on or off the trail, that was ever made.
