Pertronix On An Oddfire

I’m installing a pertronix electronic ignition on an existing point system with the 225 v6 This system as we know it has a ballast resistor. It says to take the red wire from the new modular to the ignition side of the resistor. Would that be the 12v side? Or the reduced side? Which is somewhere around 7 volts I think.

I believe you can completely remove the ballast resistor, but don’t quote me on that...

 

I just installed. my petronix along with a flamethrower coil. I left the ballast connected. But I had to use the 3.5 ohm coil. It runs great!

 

It said to leave the ballast resistor in the instructions. I also bought a 3 ohm flame thrower coil to pair with it. Randy, where did you connect the red wire from the pertronix the 12v side of the resistor ? I know the black wire goes to the negative side of the coil.

 

Just like with points. I attached it to the positive. BTW, the petronix I installed was already set up in a complete dizzy I bought. I understand that the gap at the pickup is critical to be set correctly. All I did was pull my old points dizzy out and stab in the new one.

 

be careful not to leave the key on once the unit is in, burned out our unit that way.

Yes that makes much more sense. The instructions say if it came with a balls resistor not to remove it, not a good reason I can think of to keep it. The idea before was not to have 12v to the coil now the idea is you need 12v to the coil. If I wanted to do away with the ballast resistor i just tie the 2 wire together ?

 

I have a 3 ohm flamethrower coil not sure if that would work without the ballast resistor. Like sfaulken said earlier if I remove the resistor I’d need a 1.5 ohm coil ?

 

You'd need to double check with pertronix, and not trust my admittedly faulty memory. They designed and built the thing after all. But to my recollection, the 3Ohm Coil is if you're using the Ballast resistor, and the 1.5Ohm is if you're not.

And yes, in effect, you take whatever is attached to the ballast resistor, and connect the wires.

 

pertronix goes on the supply side of the resistor to get twelve volts, the resistor is only for the coil.

 

Right, but you don't have to use the ballast resistor, if you have the right coil.

 

right, my point was the module gets twelve volts.

 

Sfaulken you are correct I also purchased a 3ohm flame thrower coil. According to the instructions it said if I switch the 3 ohm coil the ballast resistor is no longer needed. I’m assuming if i kept the factory coil and took 12v to it that it may fry it after a while ?

 

Yeah, the coil will work, but it's service life is going to be considerably shorter, than if you use the coil meant to be used without a ballast resistor.
