1974 CJ5 Renegade. So, I'm putting my jeep back together after full restoration. Before I took tub to body shop I welded up all the non-stock holes PO drilled. And I have three bolt holes that I can't figure out. I looked at all my tear down pics and unfortunately none of the pics shed any light to what might have been there. Or if even used. Maybe they were just plugged. They are not seat belts, I think 5/16, and on the back side have welded in thread plates. So seem to be factory, not added after by PO. Can anyone shed any light on these rouge holes!~

    Circled in red.

The central forward one may be the vestigal anchor for the gas tank hold-down strap. (?)

First I had to google what Vestigal meant...something like the Appendix that some of us have, or have not! :) My teachers failed me!~ And second, these holes are forward of the gas tank, which for reference is fully mounted to frame, and nothing mounted to the tub related to the tank. These holes are above the Transmission / drive shaft area. But appreciate the reply.

I think what Pete was getting at was until 1970, the gas tank was mounted underseat, and even when the tank got moved to the rear frame, the body hole stayed....of course, for my 1970, the gas tank hold down strap mount holes are none of the ones you have circled....

Hence, vestigal. If that's what it is.

Mine were plugged with white round head bolt like white plastic, original from factory!

Do you have any oil canning on those rear wheel tubs and if so did you try and fix it?

Thanks all for the replies. I'll look to cap them. Never thought about the under seat gas tank being over that far.
Allan, sorry I don't know what oil canning is. My tub, and front clip were in good shape, lot of surface rust, and one damage area hole/rust. And the body shop fixed everything prior to paint. I didn't fix any of it. Above my pay grade! I did weld up non factory holes. That's about the extent of my body work ability.

Oil-canning is when a non-flat piece of sheet metal will pop one way and then the other. Same as the bottom of an old fashioned oil can was designed to go "boopa-boopa" when pressed.

Learn something new everyday... So mine had no oil canning. All the panels were factory and true. few dents and dings, and damaged area. No deformed panels. Did have to replace part of the panel under the tool box, extending maybe two inches into the passenger foot well to make the patch blend in. After sandblasting, that area come back with a lot of small tiny rust through holes. Like a shot gun blast. While they were doing that patch, we replaced both floor supports in order to rust proof the inside of the channels and fix tool box area. One support under the tool box was bad and easily would have rusted back through in short order. Driver side was good, but did it just to be sure.

Regarding the holes, my '75 does have them. They do nothing - they are filled with domed plastic plugs, white for the front one, black for the rear.
