Seat Distance

I'm replacing the old seats in my 67 CJ5 with Smittybilt Low Back Seats and they seem awfully close to the steering wheel. Does anyone have any guidance on the stock distance from the steering wheel to the seat? Not sure if maybe I have brackets installed wrong. Thanks!

 

I've found the Smittybuilts are way too firm. They look similar to the original seats, but you sit "on" them rather than "in" them. I much prefer reworking the original seats.

I've got Smittybilts in mine and they are not as comfy as the originals, but they are OK. I got them because they were on sale and far cheaper and quicker than fixing the originals. I still have the originals to re-cover someday.

I have both the diver and passenger seats mounted tight against the rear fenderwells for a much room as possible. The driver's side is on the original seat bracket with no spacers. I made custom brackets to mount the passenger side using the original hinges and latch without being too high. The passenger side sits at a slightly different tilt than the driver side, but nobody really notices.

There is an article on Notching the rear fender well to let the seat got back farther to give taller people more leg room here somewhere. I am sure someone can point you to it. Good luck.
