Maiden Voyage

  1. 77 CJ5, 5.0.

    After two months of work, I finally took her out to pick up pizza!

    It was an success, I had a great trip, but it seemed at 30 mph i was red-lining in 4th gear, I needed more gears. I was worried I was pushing it to hard. This is all so new to me, not sure if this is how it’s is.

    Does this seem right, in lost.

    Below is before and afters in the link below.
    -Repaired floor pans, epoxy primer, Raptor liner
    -replaced carburetor
    -fixed bootleg wiring
    -installed new gauges
    -install new back seat, new front seats on the way
    -dash overlay
    -toggle switch system
    -replaced coil

    Now I’m lost on where to start, I’m moving onto things I know nothing about.

    sounds like you were in low range . 4th gear and 30mph

    Put your transfer case shifter in 2 H and try that.

    Nice work! The Jeep is looking good!

    It does sound like you might be in low range. Do you know what gearing is in the axles?

    looks good....you are going to have to move the second shifter that is to the passenger side of the standard shifter.....It will have 2wd high, 4wd high, N, and 4wd low, but I don't know for sure which position is which on a 1977. But with a bit of trial and error, you can probably figure it out. Put the transmission in neutral, depress the clutch, and see if you can get it to shift some. I would guess it should be in the following order from front of vehicle to back:

    2hi
    N
    4low

    If you have a tachometer, an accurate speed reading (by GPS most likely), and measure the rolling radius of the tire, you can also calculate it that way.

    May be a tag between the differential bolts that is stamped with the gear size. Im guessing 3;54

    The shifter can be in 2WD low range. 4WD low range puts the shifter all the way back, almost parallel to the floor. 2WD is the next big notch forward, and (most?) shifters will stay there. You can drive in 2WD low, no problem. But it's very slow.

    Ok, hubs locked, not moving, push forward one notch on the shifter. See if the Jeep moves. You should be in neutral. One more notch forward is 2WD high. Then all the way forward is 4WD high.
