Rock Sliders

Going to buy a set of rocker knockers from poison spider for my build. They're for a 76 and up, but I'm Ok modifying them/adapting them for my '63.

What do you think of tubed vs. Non-tubed?
Do you have a preference?
There's a significant price difference...

(and no, I'm not planning to make my own, but thanks for the suggestion, in advance. )

I like the idea of slick sided armor to allow the CJ's narrow width to continue to be an asset, but I also know that some like the idea of a step to stand on, or maybe a high-lift jack mounting point?

 

Can they make them for an early CJ5? That wouldn't be any different tooling maybe it is just non-stock and made to order.

Anything that I’ve ever had that stuck out beyond a door opening on a vehicle, no matter how hard I’d try to avoid, always got my pants muddy.

 

I just called them actually, just to make sure. Was told, "nope, nada, and never"...lol. (very nicely, though).

 

OK, so this is EXACTLY my experience with my 04 LJ and my poison spider sliders...lol. Loved the look, and it was great at fending off the rocks on some of the trails in Socal, but man, every darned time - mud on the back of my legs...lol (i wheel mostly in the socal winters when it's cold and dry in the desert and muddy/slick in the foothills/valleys.)

 

Made mine out of 2"x2" box tube and bolted it to the frame.

 

Mine are 2” DOM positioned/welded at the end of my full cage supports, just under body and only about a 1/2” extending beyond the body. Cage supports are bolted & welded to frame. Will not protect side of tub up very far but will support full weight of Jeep for the pesky boulders you might drive over and drop onto between tires.

I went with the tubed sliders. I haven’t noticed rubbing my Legs on them but I also haven’t been mudding in it either. This is on a ‘58. Had to modify them a bit and I tied them into my roll cage. What I like about the tubes is that my 84 year old Dad could get in using it as a step, no step stool needed! I added some grip tape on the top side so they’re not slippery when wet.

 

Are those homemade or did you buy them somewhere?

I like the tubes as steps as well. I looked for a long time and the only place that I could find who made them for a short nose is: CCF Jeep

He can cut the tube for either angled or perpendicular. Early Five Tube Fenders ?

 

I know you said you weren't going to build a set but these are quite simple if you change your mind. very strong and won't leave mud on the back of your legs. 1/8" flat steel with about a 3/4" 90 degree brake in it and some 1" x 2" channel.

 

Poison spider, same ones bigdaddy13 is looking at.

 

I have a local guy that makes these for Steve and I. He has a jig to mass produce them.
The angle is 3"x3"x 3/16 and the round tube is 1.5"x .120 wall.
The overall stick out is 3" from the body.
The rear corners need to be trimmed and rounded to match the wheel arch. The run $180 per pair plus shipping.

The drivers side is the one at the bottom. The notch is for the military gas tank well.

 

Do you think you could snap a pic of the underside? I'm wanting to know how far they extend underneath to potentially be able to tie them into the roll bar.

This was my modification, I put an extension to reach the body mounts and perimeter welded top and bottom. The existing body mount slot is about 6 inches short, obviously due to the later models wider frame. The other four bolts are going through the body to the roll cage mounting plate with bushings between the body and the sliders. Still need to flip those bolts so they are lower profile.
