I've finally pulled the tub off my 54 3b and before pulling trans would like to have everything freed up.The rear, front diff, transfer case,e brake all spin.It wouldn't go into gear so I pulled the shift tower and was able to get it moving but the gearing is locked up.I think water got in thru the tower before I bought it,there was surface rust on gears..I've been pouring trans fluid on it.I'm planning to drain it, fill to brim with used motor oil and leave it sit for a few days. Can I very gently tap gears with plastic block with out screwing it up and does anybody have any suggestions ?Thanks in advance

If it is the T-90 then you probably best to get another one that is not rusted. There is lots of them out there and not real expensive. The tranny shares it's lube with the transfer case so you need to drop the pan on the transfer and have a look see.

    Yes it's a T-90

I agree with Walt Couch. If it’s rusted bad enough to lock up there probably won’t be much that is any good anyway.

Could be the reason last tag was 1975.At least its in neutral. What about a rebuild kit and do you think its seized in the case ?

You could tear it apart and see where it's frozen. Bearings top and bottom are the first place if it's been sitting in water. The case can usually be cleaned up and used, you will just need to check the gears and clusters on them.

If it has been outdoors without a roof this will happen.

I drained both trans and transfer case .Water than sludgy fluid but no metal chips.Looks like a rebuild this winter.

Gear oil floats on the water, in other words, the cluster gear was sitting in water, just how deep? Also, was the water deep enough to flow into the transfer case?
Only a teardown and evaluation will tell what you have to work with.
I have a Jeep I bought that had a pyramid of goo on the ground under it. The transmission and transfer case were both entirely filled with rainwater, and all the gear oil flowed out the vent, slowly dripping the gear oil to form the pyramid below. The water was perfectly clear when I pulled the shift tower off. I could clearly see the cluster gear at the bottom. I would have expected orange rust-water.

When I pulled the tower off and saw the rust I expected some water and yes it came out crystal clear.Petro products float on water, knowing this can get you out the woods if you drown your vehicle. If you let it sit they will separate.
