    I think my Jeep still had the original Delco starter attached, and it was working fine at time of teardown.

    Does anyone know how to decipher date codes so I can see if it's original? I found one on EBay for $345 (!) that says the date code of 6 A 3 is January 3 1966.

    It says:
    1107320 7 C 21 DELCO-REMY USA
    4 A

    Edit - I answered my own question with the Google!

    1108776 is the part number for the starter motor.
    6= Last digit of the year (1966-1976, etc)
    M= month= December
    16= day of the month
    4= 4th shift
    Thus mine was made in 1967 (or 1977) March 21st.

    So - how should I go about testing this out of the vehicle to determine it's condition?

    I think most auto part stores have a starter tester.

    Well I got myself a rebuild kit and got everything all cleaned up - but I can't figure out how to get the starter gear off the shaft past the ring. Does anyone know how that ring comes off?
