I had my Renegade Ammeter restored by MOMA Manufacturing, a company known for concourse level restorations in Albuquerque NM. They did an amazing job.

Only knock I would give them is that it is not a dead accurate reproduction. The main gauge area, the lettering, numerals and lines are all a tad thicker than the original and the Amperes is slightly condensed. Above and tucked behind the bezel on gauge face is the Stewart Warner made in USA which appears to be dead on.

If this were my 71 LS5 I would definitely have a problem with this, but as it is my Jeep coupled with I do not think that most will pick up on this slight imperfection, I am good with it.

My ammeter was rusted, dented and the internals were shot. First pic is before restoration next to my NOS oil pressure gauge. The last two are post restoration. I cannot say enough about them and highly recommend using them if you are doing a restoration. Well done MOMA!

Bottom line. What did they charge you?...

$300 shipped. They had to produce a new silk screen for the 40-0-40 because they have never seen this particular gauge. Previous to this gauge they had only seen the normal 30-0-30 or 60-0-60 SW gauges. From here on out it would run roughly $175-225 depending on condition of the gauge.
Note, included in the price is fixing or reconditioning the internals as well.

Very impressive. Makes me wonder about what they had to do to complete such a restoration. The artwork seems straightforward. Did they replace or reuse the bezel? If they replaced the movement, they likely had to size the shunt so the needle would show full deflection at 40 amps. Maybe they could use the coil and needle from the current Stewart-Warner product. Hmm.

They fixed and reused the bezel. Reused the glass. New dust shields for the illumination, and I am not sure as far as the innards go but was assured that it would be calibrated for 40amps.

The restoration looks very nice, but as you discussed, not perfect. No one but you would ever know the difference.
I've had some Smiths and AC gauges (British) restored by Nisonger Instruments. They were as nice as your restoration. They even converted my 6 cyl tach over to 8 cyl for an engine swap. I don't know if they work on SW gauges.
