Hi guys, been a member for a while now but this is my first post. I have a 74 cj5 I want to put dual exhaust on. I am building this from the frame up. My guestion is: How do I size or get the correct downpipes and flanges? Auto parts stores only seem to know what is on their computer for available parts.

What are you starting from, the exhaust ports, stock manifolds, headers?

CJs never came with a dual exhaust so nothing aftermarket replacement is going to be your answer.

My 75 actually runs better with the 2-into 1 exhaust. Had duals and removed em ..

I 'm coming off stock manifolds. I am planning on a mild cam, performer intake, and
    a TA570 or Fitech throttle body. I wouldn't mind 2 into 1 either, 2.5 inch I presume.
    Zila Does a later y-pipe fit ?

Easiest path is to find a good custom exhaust shop in your area and let them build it for you. As mentioned, there was no dual exhaust from the factory, so no aftermarket parts. No factory replacement exhaust parts available either anymore, I presume. Welcome to the world of Intermediate Jeeps. And welcome from Boston!

Thanks timgr, being a Vt. Native hope I never gave you a dirty look as you visited . I figured I might have to go custom, getting better at my welding but not there yet. There is one site that sells a two pc y but very pricey. I think I could get a complete exhaust fabbed for less.

I live in Pa and if it ain't stock, shops around here wouldn't touch it. shops in Ohio would and they wanted $400 plus the cost of the mufflers.
I wound up doing my own, I have 2" pipe run straight to the back then bought two of the pieces that go over the axle and modified the driver side, exited both pipes at the corners and connected them to my stacks. e.i. mustang side pipes mounted vertical.
I also am running FiTech, I just got in installed this month. I haven't run it enough for it to learn but is runs smooth. :)

It cost $240 just to have the muffler replaced on my Liberty! Only one good shop around me, and he knows it.

Check with your local car/Jeep/4WD clubs and any regional forums for car enthusiasts. Here we have a chain of a few shops (Lou's Custom Exhaust) that made an exhaust system for my J10 and also repaired my VW's exhaust a couple of times. Note that a custom exhaust will be welded engine to exhaust tip, so you won't be able to replace pieces like with OEM exhaust parts.

Hour and half is normal here in Wyo. The local muffler shop closed up here. I drove 100 miles to a bona fide muffler shop to get mine done last time..
