    Hello,
I finished installing a replacement hood on my M38A1. I need to figure out a tie down system for the windshield as the hood has no footman loops installed now. Can you guys post some photos of what setups you have? I'm looking forward to trail riding with the windshield down.
    Thanks,
    Ken

I'd say your best choice is to get a footman loop and install it.

Yes but I'm not clear where that sits on the hood in relation to the windshield frame and also what you tie to on the windshield to hold it down to said footman loop

The unique strap attaches permanently to a footman screwed on at the interior dead-center of the w/s frame. The hood footman is immediately below and in front of that point, so the strap falls vertically to it when the w/s is down.

There should be a footman loop on the inside of the windshield frame also, on the vertical part. Maybe someone has a picture with the windshield down.

I'll have to look at mine again, if it's underneath.

Have you got a picture with the windshield down that shows the footman loop on the hood and the windshield too?

Doesn't the windshield have a little catchy-thing that matches the more forward loop on the hood when the hood is laid back against the windshield?

They do but when folded down the windshield doesn't line up with it.

Does the underside of your hood have the 2 flat reinforcing pieces shown in the picture?

I think I've seen them both ways.

Thanks for the replies, that clears things up. I don't have the footman loop on the windshield but I have holes where it would mount. Hood is from a 64 CJ5 and it has a reinforcement plate underneath at 12.5 inches from the rear of the hood. That seems about and inch and a half too far forward.
Windshield also seems drilled for a latch things. I can see how the forward footman loop would catch that when the hood is up

Keep in mind that the strap would loop forward of the windshield just a bit. It would be awkward to access it (footman loop) if it was underneath even the most forward part of the windshield.

Good point re access. I'll mount a loop in the stock position and see how it works

Does your windshield have the Hood Rests (look like wiper guards) and the hood latch in the center?

The hood latch is for securing the hood when in the raised position and catching wind causing it to falling on the person performing maintenance.

In this picture you can also see the tie down strap on the inside center of the windshield - the hood is lowered then rests on the two hood rests going around the wipers and gets secured by the strap going in a footman loop on the hood

You can see the Hood catch loop and the footman loop in this picture below.

If you look closely you can see the mounting holes here:

Thanks for the photos and the explanation. I have the hood rests (with decent welt even!) but lack the hood latch. I have a strap on order, just need to place some footman loops and I should be good to go.

There is an after market bracket made for that purpose. They are a squared off U Bolt with the flat top rubberized where the windshield sits. I think mine are 1/4" dia., they come with a back-up plate that goes inside the hood that makes the hood stronger. Someone here will know what they are called, but when you cinch your windshield down you don't want to dent your hood, if don't tie it down it bounces too.

Hmm interesting. The old hood for my Jeep had something like that installed. Would be interesting to see about how they are supposed to be located.

The Bumpers were on the windshield frame around the wipers they came down on the hood, then the strap went through the foot loop and cinched it down. The loop on the front of the hood, the tall one, held the hood up when it was open, there was a latch on the windshield frame too. Here is a picture of my neighbors CJ 5, you can see the bracket that the windshield lays down on.[IMG]
