Cracked Block

I thought it must be, but now I know for sure. This is the 225 out of my cj6. Other than some JB Weld or similar, is this thing fixable? It got hot on me one time 2-3 yrs ago, and has had a drip ever since. Only add maybe a 1/2 gal of coolant/yr. I really like the oddfire. I would really like to fix it.

I have heard stories of guys fixing cracks like that with JB weld and driving it for years.. I would weld it with some high nickel rod after pre heating and post heating.. Or you could just buy mine when I install my 4.3 in the winter/ early spring.

There's an engine masters episode... budget six or similar but they dropped a newly machined ford 300ci inline 6 and broke an ear off the back.
They went into fixing the broken block and it did well.
Pre heat and post heat. High nickel rod. Deep V cut and drill the end of the crack out.

 

Pin it or get a new block. If you want to band aid it until you can find a new block you can JB Weld it (epoxy) with proper prep but it is a temporary fix.

 

fwiw my 87 350 warrior threw a chain and broke the case years ago broke to the inside and puked almost all the oil. cleaned and sanded it on the trail as best we could. mixed some jb weld stick epoxy and applied . waited an hour for replacement oil to arrive filled it and have been using it since no leak. still carry some stick epoxy now.

 

what pressure is your cap? if its 13 or 16 try a low pressure cap like an 6-8lb . I would try brazing it. Iv never done that before but seems like the best/ easiest fix for it. Although i think jb weld would do fine especially with a low psi cap

 

I have a 7lb cap on this one. I used the electric fan that came with the new aluminum radiator, simply didn't move enough air. I bought a fan that moved twice as much air and had no problem since. I have found an intermediate grill since then, so my plan is to use a mechanical fan this time.

 

I agree on a new block if you are running it long term. JB is ok to get by but the way I see it, you will be miles away from anywhere when it really decides to spring a leak.

 

Block. 225's aren't hard to find.

 

a frien of mine, around 1966, had a nice Peugeot 203, first car. We were student. because we lived in Paris, he parked this car with special agreement in the yard of our high school.
But winter came, and extreme cold... engine craked, broken. First lesson for car owner.
There are probably nowadays possibilities of repairing, maybe without removing the engine.
I would try the easiest solution first, then...

 

I would expect any of these heroic repairs, like lock-n-stitch, would end up more expensive than another core. Conventional wisdom says find another core unless it's a rare part (ie Duesenberg or such). What's the condition of the engine, otherwise? If it's ready for a refresh, I'd look for a better core and start from there.

 

machine shops weld up blocks all the time. my block had tons of cracks. but its got to be torn down and at that point you might as well rebuild it right.

Your cracks look like they are from freezing rather than an overheat. Either way, a good replacement block is the best fix. This can be welded, but would require disassembly and an oven to do it correctly.

Actually the guy had 3 of them and I bought all of them.

I don't know much about condition, except none are stuck
There are a few goodies in the lot. Flywheel, bellhousing, ignition switch


power steering pumps, brackets, HEI dist., rear dump ex manifolds, even a air cond. compressor. I'm pretty sure these 2 are 231 even fire, buts thats ok

 

I also bought a power steering gear from him from a 95 Wrangler
