Startup Procedure For Newly Rebuilt 225?

    is there a definitive procedure for the startup of a 225 after a fresh rebuild? bought this motor in a basket, and theres ZERO to start from. carb rebuilt, motor rebuilt, converted to HEI etc. so theres many variables to consider.

    break in oil etc.

    I just broke in a freshly rebuilt 225 , I spun the oil pump first to build pressure and get oil to the top end , then installed the distributor. I filled it with delo 400 15w30.and used a zinc additive also .started it up I was close with the timing and once started I turn hei to get it to run clean and spun the motor a 2000rpm for 15 min , keep an eye on temp, pressure and water leaks .

    I was always told to run straight water in the cooling system during initial start up of a fresh engine. Something about, if there is a coolant leak into the oiling system (like a head gasket problem?), the straight water is less likely than anti freeze, to lead to damage of the bearings. Might be hocus-pocus. Just what I was told. Maybe a pro can confirm or deny this info.

    225 pack oil pump with petroleum jelly (vaseline)

    Good advise. Assuming you put in a new cam and lifters, Melling cams actually recommends Delo and I would take the above advice and add an additional bottle of Lucas with ZDDP. Drive it around for 20 min after cam break-in to break in the rings under load then dump the oil. I would stick with the Delo for the life of the vehicle but don't want to start another oil debate.
