Warn Mk 2 Hubs Locking Tabs.

After so many posts about cleaning/restoring these hubs I decided to clean mine up. Scotch brite abrasive wheel and 400 grit paper and it was looking pretty good. I got some new locking tabs from Walcks. Nicely made stainless steel but they are pretty thick. In fact so thick that when bent over to lock on the flat they stick out proud of the edge surface of the hub as you can see in the picture. With six tabs sticking out higher than the edge of the hub it makes fitting the wheel rim over the hub pretty difficult. I was able to finally do it but after chewing up my newly polished hubs. Has anyone had this difficulty? I had some of Herms which are thinner but the wrong shape. This is going to make tire changing in the field much more difficult. Thanks.

 

Thickness of metal is .072. So .072 x 2 sides. Diameter is reduced .144 or a little more than 1/8". Problematic.

 

You know , I haven't tried taking the wheel off, but I can see what you mean. When I get home, I'll have to measure thickness of the ones on my wagon as I have pulled the wheels off it.

 

Your darn tootn' your gonna have trouble getting your wheels on & off !
After advice from these fellow forum members , I used these instead from McMaster- Carr :

 

I got some from Herm that were not exactly right in profile but were a lot thinner.

Mint..... I could feel them 'Bite' When I torqued them. I haven't wheeled with it yet , but they are pretty much guaranteed to work. You could also Lock-Tite the threads.

I think there is too much grease down the holes for Loctite to work.

 

I kind of like keeping the tab locks. Warn has no idea what I am talking about. Torque King, no luck. Herm no longer has a supply.
Walcks seems aware of the problem and suggested hard hammer work which I already tried. Ebay no luck.
Any suggestions?

 

I think the last ones I got were from Walck's for my D30. I just massaged them with a hammer until the wheel fit.

 

Boy am I glad you brought this up before I had a need to change a tire in the field. But this explains why several of the rough sets I got to restore had split ring washers instead of the these T lock tabs. I'm thinking they should be thinner but I'm going to measure some of the old one that were on my wagon where I have changed wheels.

 

Try that before.....not worth a penny for me....if you have a locker in the axle it wont hold. I try every method....nordlock, loctite, stud, even all of them together....all getting lose fast.


the locking tab i did not try but i would have more confidence in them than the other option.

As for me i ended up swapping internal locking hub. No problem for the last 4 years.

 

So you tried the McMaster Carr ones and they didn't work? I don't have a locker so they might work? I suggested to Walcks the next batch needs to be thinner. Or somehow the ones I bought from them need to be reduced in thickness. I was thinking a surface grinder with magnetic table but they are stainless and non magnetic.

 

use a bolt and a nut....squeeze the tab between them....put the bolt into a vises and grind it down.

 

So you are saying to grind the tab that sticks out down? I will try that.
I also have a milling machine. Perhaps I could make a fixture to hold the piece and use that.
Good idea. I think the thickness would have to be reduced a little way back into the piece to get it to bend correctly.

Here is what I did. Thanks to Johneyboy I realized all I had to do was put the piece in the mill vice with the tab sticking up and mill the tab.
I milled them from .074 down to about .050. Put them on with they milled side down and they bent over just fine. Now the wheel fits without a struggle. Thanks!

 

Good Job........... Nice to have the right tools, a good man can repair anything with the right ones. Just takes some thinking

 

this may be a tad late of reply, but Greevesman does'nt have a locker on his front.

 

Clean the grease out ? That's what has been done before. Pretty sure the Torque spec is 35 Ft #'s ? Perhaps Tim will add his knowledge on that ?
