Power Steering Pump- Looking For Ideas

I want to get moving on power steering for Tonk. I'll be using a ram assist setup like Nate is using.

I have a pump setup that fits onto the back of the genny but there's an (not insurmountable) interference issue with the starter.

The space where most people would put the pump is earmarked for a governor.

I've considered a crank driven pump a'la Monroe unit but I have doubts about sufficient flow.

I'm looking at electric pumps, prices on used units seem to be getting reasonable but i haven't been able to find much about their power draw @ "idle"

Anyone with a proven solution or a good idea?

Electric, there ya go. You may need to upgrade to an alternator, possibly one of those alternators that look like a generator. The Binky series uses an electric pump from a junkyard Mercedes, maybe you could look at that.

My 10si alternator is rated at like 80 or 90 amps and its just enough to power my lights, brake lights and electric fan at the same time. Your generator won't easily handle the load of a PS pump at full lock very well.

I'm thinking the electric pump will only draw full load when when turning the wheels while stopped which the battery should be able to cover, at speed there's really no need for assist. But the pump will apparently still maintain 100-200 psi in the system, just not sure what that draw would be.

What about mounting the pump above the generator and getting a double groove generator pulley to run the pump? That way your crank pulley is open for the governor.

Possibility- I do have a hy-Lo pump (unknown condition). but I kinda like the oil filter where it's at. :(

Don't you already have the Armstrong system?

Yeah but it's getting old & OE replacement parts are hard to come by :(

I'm very pleased with the steering of the (Herm) manual Ford Saginaw. Even when I ran BFG ATs it felt fine. Now with skinnies it's VERY easy to turn and parts are very available.

Now.. I'm not so pleased with the exhaust clearance, but I plan on fixing that when I get some room and time to work on it. I'm gonna put joints in the shaft and run a carrier off the frame. It will add play but it will still be light years ahead of the Ross.

If you do wanna go power, I'm with Timgr. Go electric unless you can use the hydro for other stuff too (plow, 3pt, etc).

Use a pump like I used that has a remote reservoir. You should be able to leave everything stock and make a mounting bracket.

I was actually thinking about stuffing one of those mini Nippon-Denso alts in a genny case & filling the empty space in the back with a pump but I really haven't got the time for Vast Projects. :(

I dig the genny looking alternators, just not the price lol.
