I found some 4.09 gears but they came in a Dodge front axle. I plan on scrapping the housing just I am not able to get the case out. Any tips on removing the case without a spreader.

Thanks I will give it a try. I have removed Jeep 27's 30's and 44's but the 3/4 ton axle is tougher.

My guess is that way works better when the axle is in and with tires on. No help for this situation.

carrier is not going to fall out with axles
the use of rag . is to stop the ring from turning . but by applying force to the pinion
the carrier will walk out of journals rather than turn
my only other suggestion is bolt heavy angle iron to it and use a jack

Two prybars. One top, one bottom. Be caeful of pinion (spider) gears. And it’s a case the ring gear bolts to, not a carrier. The carrier is the part that houses the ring and pinion, case, and all associated parts.

Usually pry bars will work, but I have also used a slide hammer to pop stubborn ones loose. My OTC slide hammer set includes a 2 jaw puller attachment, I clamp that to the diff housing, usually breaks loose with a few good hits/pulls.

How does one get the case back in after using this method? I struggled to get the case popped out of my front axle in my dentside ford and ended up giving up. After I read about the rag trick, I worried about getting it back together without a spreader.

Tap in the bearing races with the case with a dead blow hammer..

I thank all for the various information. I located a 2 foot crow bar over the 10 inch cats claw that I started with.

Did it work? I couldn't find a good spot to pry without marring the case.

If I marred the case, which I probably did. I can't see how it would hurt anything. It is boxed up now, we closed on your new house built in 1953 today. I can't wait till I get all my belongings moved into a smaller garage.
