We are currently relocating our roll bar to inside the body of our CJ5 and switching to the Smittybilt bumper and tire carrier. However, we are learning that the reverse light interferes with the new bumper and swing out tire carrier. We plan to extend the bumper away from the frame but are still unsure as to the attachment. Would bolting through a piece of tube steel from the frame to the bumper work? Or would this create too much of a moment arm on the rear of the frame causing the bolts to shear off? Another idea that we had was to use the existing plates and channel that are bolted to the frame and weld a piece of angle iron on to this. And then bolt the new bumper to the angle. I drew a couple quick pictures to help show what I am thinking. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

I see no reason it would not work, I'd suggest a slight modification: use a section of round pipe or square tube 3" or 4" butt welded to the plates. One plate goes to frame, other to the bumper. The pipe or tube cannot crush or deflect and no real chance the blots would shear.

Similar to what I did. I took these pictures when I rebuilt/reinforced the rear frame ends. The new end pieces are what you see here and the stock rear crossmember.
