T-90 Cluster Gear?

I recently bought a new lower cluster gear for the T-90 transmission I am rebuilding. After receiving the new cluster gear I noticed that there is no groove for the thrust washer , like the old one had. What do you do ? I was told to cut a new grove to accommodate the thrust washer, but I also read to just flatten the little bent pieces on the thrust washer itself. What is the best?

    Sounds odd..?
Sure you ordered the correct gear..?
My vote be to grind the gear carefully to fit the Thrust Washer.
The tag of the washer needs to be "locked".
The Thrust Washer then only has ONE side to wear against rather than two... lasting longer.
    Just my 2cents... :)

I had the same issue with a T90c rebuild.
I consulted "metalshaper". I belive he told me to flatten or grind off the little tabs. IIRC
I have had no problems. I have also heard about cutting groves in the gear is good too.

You only want rotation between the countershaft gear and the "bronze face" of thrust washer.

Somehow I recall that the B-W 3-speed transmissions I've worked on (not the T-90) have had the notch for the thrust washers machined into the case, not the gear. Am I remembering this wrong, or is the T-90 different?

    nickmil In mothballs.

There are two styles of T-90 counter/cluster gears (gear tooth counts notwithstanding). One style has the gearset notched for the thrust washers and one style of transmission has the case notched for the thrust washer. I suspect it has to do with era/year of production but have nothing to support that supposition as when I get them they are typically cores with identifiers missing. Ymmv.
