Ring & Pinion

I want to replace my ring&pinion. It is a dana 44 with 3,73. 10 spline

My question is ; where can I find an affordable set. Seems 10 spline is very expensive in combination with 3,73

And another question is ; can I use the crown 935650 with 26 spine and change the yoke to 26 spline. Than Rockauto or other suppliers have sets around 200 dollars

Any advice from people with experience in this?

    Thanks

I was able to find a set of used gears. The used set had a different spine count, so I changed the yoke.
I change my rear 44 gears to 4.27 to match the Dana 30 front I bought.

Another thought. 3.73? Changing gears $$.

I'd think they are all the same for the Dana 44 axle. The spline count would affect the side gears (spider gears) but not the ring and pinion. There's no rule that the axle spline count must match - or not - the pinion splines.

Year? Do you have a tag on your axle? It would be good to post the Jeep PN on the axle so that it can be compared with the gear set spec'd in the parts book. My J-series parts book covers 1962-73 and gives the 935650 PN for the Dana 44 3.73: gear set, regardless of the axle spline count.

The 3.73 ratio is common in throw-away axles here. I expect you could find a used set if you advertised. Shipping to Holland would be something, but still way cheaper than new gears.

Check Amazon local to you, if you want new parts: https://www.amazon.com/3-73-PINION-MASTER-BEARING-INSTALLATION/dp/B01LZHMYCR/ref=asc_df_B01LZHMYCR

I do meen the splines on the pinion. Mine has 10 splines yoke and the 935650 has 26 . I don't know why 3,73 is so bad. I run 33 inch and very powerfull. But Ok, that's a mather of taste I think. So if a 935650 has 26 splines on the pinion I can buy an other yoke.

Rockauto gives that number for al cj's till 1986. (even for the TJ from 2003) I hardly can imagine that it fits my 69. There is no tag anymore on my axle

Would you think that it will doable to re-shim this used set , or is that a stupid idea

another reason to do a rebuild of the ring and pinion is that I can't get rid of a ticking noise. When slowing down and putting in the clutch the comes a ticking noise withe the speed of the axleshaft.

    U joints are new
transfer case is all new( it had the ticking before doing the transfer, hoped this was the solution)
A lot of play( backlash) at the axle

So in my opinion it is something in the the axle or the transmission

When putting it on jackstands and let the engine run engaged in third( stationary) with no resistance , it sounds if it is comming from the trans/transfer area.

I think I will get the axle cover of and see if something is bad looking.

Hi, Do you know how many splines it was?

A bad wheel bearing will tick with the rotation of the axle. That would be a more likely cause than some issue with the ring and pinion. Have you looked under the axle cover for damage? Axles can run a long time with a lot of rotational slop. Typically a worn-out third member (differential) would whine with a pitch that changes with road speed, I think.

    Video won't play for me.

That's more than a ticking sound . yes pull the cover and check things out . also check to see if your park brake might have some broken parts and transfering the noise. Could also be in the transfer case . try high and low range and see if the noise changes . I have some 3.73 gears with 26 spline on the pinion . my bet is a broken tooth in the rear .

I will keep you posted. Working on the trans right now.
