Just start from scratch, wouldnt worry so much about how/why it changed. I'd rebuilt the carb to factory adjustments, clean and inspect/rebuild distributor, change plugs and wires, flush out fuel tank and lines, set timing, and try again.

 

This is true....but he should not be running rich at sea level compared to 9000 ft.

Make sure you use copper core plugs and wires and a distributor cap with brass fittings.

I have a hurricane engine and a solex carb. It was not running well.
1 - I cleaned the carburetor, as explained on the forum. The pump inside has a membrane , etc... Thas was dirty then cleaned.
2 - I modifid the rich screw.
3 - before I had checked the spark plugs, I believed that I had new ones to be sure of quality.
4 -I checked the position of the ignition, just to be turned easily.
Since this time, my engine turns perfectly, winter or summer.
These engines are very simple. I don't see why the level high - ignition point would change suddenly. Just some small changes are enough, but all must be cleaned and quality of fuel too. TIme is of essence. Be patient. Repeat the tests modifying one parmeter only...

 

I have put plugs, wires, cap, and new fuel in it. Next will be points, condenser, rotor, and new fuel filter.
Also, last night the electric fuel pump quit working so that needs to be first on the list.

 

Check fuel pressure if you run an e pump. These carbs like low pressure.
