Greaseable T90 Transmission Throwout Bearing

Over Memorial Day weekend I finished up the installation of my rebuilt T90 trans and Dana 18 t-case for my 1964 CJ5 (F134 engine). My old man had an idea to prolong the life of the throw out bearing. So I made a simple mod to the throwout bearing by drilling a small hole in the bearing housing, threading in a grease fitting (filed down to not contact the inner race) and tack welded it to the bearing case to allow for a greaseable bearing. Has anyone done this? Pro’s/Con’s?

    Thanks for the input.

How can you get to it to grease it? Over greasing could ruin your clutch but I'm sure you've thought of that. I don't know about all of them but do know at least some heavy trucks had/have greaseable throw out bearings.

Older vehicles sometimes had greaseable throw-outs.

Seems reassuring, although in reality very few throw-out bearings go bad today.

Submerging in mud and water as often as possible has been the only reason mine have gone bad.

Yep, and they usually have a flexible tube that goes out of the flywheel housing to enable the tech to grease the bearing.

Where did the drilling debris go? Most out, none into bearing I hope?

I will just lift the floor panel over the trans and pull the two bolts that hold the vented clutch cover off and just squirt a little grease in. I greased up the drill bit before drilling to catch the drill shavings. As stated the water getting into the bearing is what my thought was too so purge it out by greasing it. This isn’t something I’m going to do all of the time. I submerge it deep enough I will lube it. Just as a 12 veteran as a heavy truck technician maintenance is a top priority of mine and anytime I get into mud I grease all fittings. “I even put grease fittings on the bell crank at the ball joints from frame to trans/t-case”

    Thanks for the input
