Ok, going to bring this back up. It occurred to me that there must have been an obvious difference between the Renegade ammeter and oil gauge compared to a well optioned CJ5 with the gauges factory.
My buddy has a well optioned non Renegade Mar 71 with his original dealer sheet that clearly states the options his jeep came with, gauges, T18, dash pad etc...... Here is my question to this find.

Why does a heavily optioned Mar 71 CJ5 with the factory ammeter and oil pressure gauge NOT have the unicorn Renegade only 75 ohm resistor and additional wiring?

Why is the 75ohm shunt so necessary for the Renegades but not on the optioned CJ5?? Or am I just an idiot and am missing something really simple??

Having part numbers would be a start. I've often wondered why so many of the oem oil pressure gauges failed in the renegades.

Kaiser was getting ready to sell to AMC. Like most parts on the Jeeps at that time, Kaiser was just putting what they laying around on Jeeps.

So after a year and a half of searching, I was looking through a bunch of NOS for the AMC years.. I spotted what appeared to be 2 NOS Oil pressure gauges hiding out in plain view in this collection. Can you spot them? I called him and said "I can't blow up the pic enough to see what the two gauges are above the rear view mirrors, but they appear to be for a Ren1 or 2 oil pressure gauges" He walked over and said "I am not sure what they were for but they are definitely oil pressure gauges and are 0-60 and there are two of them" I said I will take them both!!!

Here are the two NOS Oil pressure gauges.

I’m pretty sure my Mar ‘71 Ren II does not have that resistor in the wiring. Definitley has the rest of the Ren II bits besides the tire carrier for the solid back panel. Someone posted that the later Ren IIs didn’t have that bit of wiring because AMC was setting up the harness for the ‘72s. I’m not sure how accurate this is.

My march '71 ren II does not have a extra resistor on firewall.Just a junction block and the wiring for the amp meter. Both gauges are working great no problems.
So yes I agree there was a change. As far as someone saying they were using any parts on hand to complete some builds I for one never believed that story.
More urban myths started here with no proof. mike

I found and picked up a nos w gauge for the Renegade II, seems it's 6v and maybe feeding it 12v was a killer.

I’m installing the original oil pressure gauge. I had a mechanical gauge in for the last 27 years. I forgot where the (2) purple wires go. (71 Renegade I). Does it ground to the dash? IMG_2184.jpeg IMG_2185.jpeg

Typically, one has to come from 12V source and flow through the meter and go to the sending unit mounted in the block (which is where it grounds).....

One comes from the ignition switch and one goes to the big underhood engine harness connector:
