Any One Running An In-tank Fuel Pump?

The engine is a stock 1991 Chevy 350 with TBI. My tank is a new, stock style tank (1975, rear mount tank). I was wondering if anyone has been running an in-tank pump, that works. Seems like now would be a good time to change since I can cut and weld on the new tank if necessary without blowing myself up.

 

<Raises hand. I have a 75 CJ, 304 TBI'd. I installed a GM pump in mine. Ask for a pump from an early 90's GM truck, 91/92 .. You will need to do some engineering, but not too hard to do.. I straightened the pickup tube and cut it off to fit. I connected the pump using a piece of fuel line and small hose clamps. I also added a stiffener using a piece of small stiff metal. Also added the filter sock on the bottom. As for wiring , I used the fuel tank access hole piece/cover for a ground on the inside. Drilled and tapped to 6-32. I attached this to a tab for the fuel gauge.. Use your imagination, and keep it inside. I went to Ace hardware and found a plastic piece with a shoulder, that had a hole in it to fit an 8-32 screw. Drill a hole tight to fit in the lid. I attached the pump hot wire to this. Might look for something rubber too. I ran a wire from the fuel pump relay to the screw on the outside. Don't remember exactly how I sealed it all up but I did use some stuff called Seal All. I also ran a ground from the top access piece to the frame for a ground insurance.

 

Good info Zila. that's exactly what I was hoping for. Did you do any kind of baffle around the pump? If not, have you had any issues with it when the tank isn't very full?

 

No baffle and no problems.

 

Check out the Tanks inc. PA-2 pump. That’s what I am going with.

 

Just a heads up. Before you buy anything make sure it is compatible with your TBI system. If you are using a 91 GM TBI unit, then you need around 12 psi and that's all.. Newer TBI systems use a higher pressure.

 

I’ve got plans of making my own tank at some point. My plan was to start with a steel tank out of a GM pickup or S10 with the round locking ring style pump assembly. I like how these mount and it’s easy to cut the ring mount out of a tank and graft it into whatever shape tank I want that’ll fit my ‘75 CJ. Then just use a stock pump assembly for a GM 4.3 to match my Howell style injection system.

 

I run a 4.3 ltr TBI S-10 pump in my M38a1 tank. I found that it will pressurize the tank and blow the seems of the tank. I found that. You need to run a roll a over vent valve and vent it to a carbon canister. This is the only way to vent it properly. This allows no fumes or vapors to escape and better for the environment.

 

I have the same fuel pump setup as Zila in my tank. Rock Auto sells the correct TBI fuel pump under the Bosch brand that’s pretty cheap and has a life time guarantee. If you connect your fuel pump to the pick up tube as in the picture make sure to use submersible fuel hose. You can purchase short pieces of it on Amazon.

FWIW I got mine at NAPA. The hose came with it as I recall.

 

Just picked up mine there, and the hose did come with it. Good thing too, it was 30 something dollars a foot otherwise.
