Flanged 44 To Full Float???

Can you convert a flanged offset 44 to a full float?

I do see that herm does make a kit. The kit only offers one length axel shaft. Isn't the later 44 wider?

I am sure all CJ 44’s except that one in 86 are the same narrow track width.

 

The dana 30 that is pair with it is wider than a 25. I will have to go to my yard and get the tape measure out.

If the axle shafts shown as available are all the same length, it would seem that the kit is not for an offset flanged 44 but rather 1972 and later models that were centered.

 

There is a short and long shaft.

 

Here is a list of some of the stuff to make a D44 FF like the D23-2. I don't remember where I found this but I had it written down in a binder.

bolt pattern on the bearing hub is 6 on 3.437" with a flange OD of 4.100

You will also need to have the entire length turned down to 1.29" OD to pass through the spindle.

The ends of the flanged axle tube are a different bolt pattern than the early two piece D44s, so how will a spindle bolt up to it?

 

It’s for a tapered d44 then.

As far as flanged to full float, Why?

 

Why? Locking rear hubs are nice for flat towing. Also if you break an axel you don't loose a wheel!!!

 

Trade the flanged axle with someone who would love to have it, and use a tapered axle to go full float.

I think I have a few as well. Was hoping to use the flanged one as it’s the same width as the Dana 30 up front.

 

I think tapered and flanged are nearly the same width, if not identical. Spacers are what are usually used on the rear if you want the same track width.

And I sorta remember it being mentioned that going FF spaces the wheels out an inch or two more? Might be imagining that.

 

I have one of herms kits on my 2a, I will check that as well.

The full float gives you a bit more width.
