Anyone have the locks stay stuck on an fhead exhaust valve? Ive had the spring commpressor on the valve since saturday and it just wont pop. Got 3 out of 4 valves out but cyl 3 just doesnt want to pop. Any tips or tricks to break the bond so i can get the valve out?

--nothing is budging. The retainer, locks, and valve stem are one with each other at the moment. Spring isn't compressing...

I use a socket with a diameter close to that of the top retainer, and rap it with a light hammer to break it loose. Its even better it you can do this with a little tension from the spring compressor. If the keepers (locks) are stuck after the retainer is depressed, I use a small screwdriver to twist them loose.

with the head off or on the block........I hit the valve tip with a large rubber mallet several times to cycle the valve..........you can also soak the retainer with some penetrating oil overnight.

Aren’t the valves in the block? All the suggestions are great for an overhead valve engine, now think about where the valves are. Use the socket as suggested before and lever it up to open the valve then tap the valve down.

    Yup;)
I soaked it yesterday before i left. I had tapped the valve end saturday. Thought about a prybar last night after posting this. I'll give that a shot.

Yea, it would be easy if it was in the head. Makes it a little more difficult being in the side of the block

Got to thinking about that.....If you were to rotate the motor over till that valve is open and then , if you had a piece of say aluminum pipe / tubing that say was around 1.5" -2.0" diam.+/- x .250 wall with an ID that would fit around the lifter below.......then split the pipe / tubing in 1/2..........slip it in there around the lifter , maybe put a screw hose clamp around it , rotate the motor until the cam lobe is now off the high point and then gently tap down on the valve head above with a brass drift.......that might break it loose?.............you might also need to cut a window at the top of your tubing tool to get at the keepers if they get in the way once released?..............just thinking out loud.

Sorry, I didn't read this was the exhaust valve in the block. If you can manage to wedge somthing under the spring retainer to raise the valve off its seat, then a careful tap in the center of the valve head should free it up. Just make sure to keep it centered so as not to bend the valve.

    Got it on lunch(y)
Used a prybar and lifted the valve up just a hair and popped the valve with a brass hammer. Finally broke it loose
