Intermediate Leaf Springs Vs Early Cj

Is there a difference? Will ECJ springs work on an intermediate or are the intermediate front springs longer?

Same length. width, height. The later intermediates ('74ish-75) used a spring bushing with a longer inner sleeve. This makes the hangers on the frame slightly wider. You can make up the difference with flat washers.

I'm looking for a deal actually. My buddy that has helped me work on mine a bunch bought a 74 over the weekend. It's a project for sure and the price reflected that. His springs are almost touching the bump stops without anybody in it. Just wanted to know which springs would or wouldn't work.

 

I have a pair of front springs that I would be willing to give you (need bushings). They are older BDS I think...in the 1.5"-2" range. In pretty good shape and ride nice. I may be driving through sac next week and could maybe drop them off. Otherwise I'm a bit out of the way. I havn't been to JW in a very long time...would they have a set or pair of rears for these old jeeps?

 

That would be so awesome. My buddy is a starving college student (going for his welding cert) right now. J&W would probably have a set but probably the same price as buying new BDS. I considered buying a new set and passing mine along, this way I would only have to buy new rears . Need anything on trade? I have two gas tanks (under seat and rear under frame, axles, and other odds and ends).

 

Hey James, no problem. I may have front shocks for him too...I'll look. I'd be happy to see his old jeep come alive. I'll be on my way up north for my annual salmon fishing pilgrimage and I usually go through sac (probably next Wednesday). I'll think about that rear tank...I actually gotta get ridda some of stuff. I have a rear seat in good shape (smitty-built maybe, but no brackets) you or your buddy can have too...just not sure it'll fit in the little Subaru with all my gear. Feel free to PM me. Cheers

I'm off Wednesday so can meet you anywhere convienent, and of course it didn't come with a rear seat Lol.

Here's the pics from the CL ad of his Jeep. It's got some rust issues but given he's a good welder he's not too intimidated about fixing those.











We worked on it all afternoon Sunday, didn't even scratch the surface of things needing attention.

And here he is driving his new Jeep 2.5 hours home. Notice the concentration keeping the loose steering wobbly thing on the road .



And the cell phone holder on the dash... yeh, only fits a Motorola flip phone. No self-respecting teenager has a flip phone

 

I love it!..and those classic wheels! An old rig like that is perfect for a young welder. I usually come down the 80 but the 50 works too. I know sac well (grew up in Orangevale) so it will work out fine. Hmmm, there's a good chance Ill need a good welder at some point. I weld...., just not so well.

measure your springs ,they should be 39 3/4" long . Early cj are 36"If use the early cj5,You have a very hard ride.

I love the position of the steering wheel spokes as your friend is driving down the road! that looks like a good project.

That's near the top of my list of things that drives me nuts!

 

My racer was always like that. Used to drive my "type-A" buddy NUTS!!

 

Worse than it being on crooked is the adapter they used to get it on. The steering wheel was REALLY high with the 4" tall adapter. We removed the adapter and made our own which helped, and we put the wheel on straight

 

In a have a factory wheel in rough condition and manual steering box if he wants them.

 

Thanks. I'll ask him. We did adjust the steering box and it was actually pretty decent. He signed up for the forum but not sure he got authorized by an admin yet.

 

What would that steering box do different than the one that I have?
