Not Exactly A Quitter - Need Different Tires

about to buy a JL Sport S for my son. HOWEVER, I have an issue with the stock tires. I cant stand a Jeep with street tires and mud tires are only available on the Rubi's. Looking to replace the tires with a mud tire

stock tires are 245/75R17

I know nothing about tires other than the 31", 33",......

Any thoughts on what I can put under a stock JL. I don't expect him to be off road much in it (at least that he tells me about )

All I know is the stock All Terrains have to go

 

Instead of mud tires look at the Cooper Discoverer AT3. Good off-road reviews and still has good road manners.

255/70R17 would be approximately the same size as the stock tire. Just a little wider.

They also have the stock size in a load range E.

 

This is the LT275/70R18 Load Range E on my Ram 2500 so you can see what they look like in real life. Deep tread and large gaps between the tread blocks. That tire is 33.2" according to the Cooper web site.

 

was looking at Discoverer STT PRO LT285/70R17E read and looked at pictures of LT285/70R17E on a JL Sport S on the JL forum.

 

Let's take a step back for a minute. You're buying a new JL for your son? I assume he's in the 16-18yr range? That's a lucky kid.

I don't know much about those but a buddy of mine had a set of Discoverer ST MAXX and really liked them. They are $$$.

 

I'd hate to have your insurance bill but dang your kids are lucky. lol

 

If you have a good 4x4 shop someplace close, you may be able to find some essentially new take-offs for cheap. I've bought two sets of Rubicon (5 wheels and tires) for $500 each. $100 for a new MT and wheel is a decent deal.

 

I have them on my XJ Cherokee. No complaints.

LOL here is how I justify it. I plan on paying for 4 years of college. The contingency on the Jeep is that he must have and keep a 3.5+ GPA. Being that my daughter is going to college this year, I know that a 3.5GPA + a 27+ on the ACT will save me at least double the cost of the Jeep in college tuition.

They had it at the dealer today so I stopped by to look at it, it is going to be a nice ride. BUT the wheels and tires SUCK!!!! As bad a white walls on ton a Challenger Demon. He is going to have to learn to drive a manual but that is something everybody should know.

I did order a 4 Wheel Drive (Willys tailgate style) to go on the back. That is one of my favorite parts of my Willys so I figure his JL needs it too.....

 

ended up going with Discoverer STT PRO LT285/70R17E I think it is a much better look.....
