Years ago I had a 1964 CJ5 that had a skid plate that bolted to the transmission cross member. Last year I bought a 1971 CJ5 Renegade I (Sept 1970 build date) that does not have a skid plate. Were skid plates standard or an option?
How different would a 1971 skid plate be from an earlier one.
If this isn't there correct forum for this question please move it and let me know the correct forum.

Renegade should have 2 skid plates, one for the transmission / transfer case and one attached to the engine oil pan.

If it's gone, it's been removed. No different. Should be the same part through '75 with minor changes.

I had a pile of skid plates that there were no two that matched in the whole pile. It seems that just about every year there was an access hole added or deleted. The overall shape is pretty close through the run up to 75. They rarely get put back on as it makes it much harder to work on things.

Mine was AWOL from a prior clutch job along with several other pieces the hack decided the jeep didn't need.Herm helped me out. The oil pan with skid may be harder to source if missing. mike

I will look at the oil pan tonight. I am sure the engine is not original because there is a metal tag attached to the dash from Buereau of Automotive Repair that has info showing a 1964 engine being installed. IIRC early Calif. smog laws were tied to the year the engine was built. I was in high school and college at the time and IIRC for a short period you could install an early smog exempt motor into a newer car. Once the lawmakers figured out the hot rodder's loop hole the law changed.

Were the Ren's oil pan skid plates just spot welded to the bottom of the oil pan like the old flatfenders?

That was a poor design. Abuse the jeep hard enough, and the spinning driveshaft yoke can hook on the side of the plate and peel away the spot welds, ripping holes in the bottom of the oil pan. AMHIK.

BTDT on my 1973 w/232 six.sheared a spring center bolt and driveline yoke hooked the skid plate and off she came.Field fix was sheet metal screws wrapped with cotton string to fill the holes. Yes Ren II oil pan skid is spot welded on. mike
