    Just scored a 1981 M8274 for my 81' CJ-5! :bananatool:
The winch is in pretty good shape but the previous owner damaged the clutch so he had the brilliant idea of "lincoln locking" the clutch keyed pinion.
unfortunately the pinion is discontinued by warn (P/N 9054).
Any info of were I can get a replacement?
    thanks!!

Other than the needle in the haystack search for a NOS or used, the only option I know of is replacing the motor with the newer splined shaft version. That is a direct bolt-in and, at least for the series wound motor I purchased directly from Warn, the pinion was included. You supposedly do get a little bit of additional performance but, IMO, not really noticeable-at least not in normal operation.

I have the old keyed motor from my 8274. The gear broke, so I had to upgrade to the newer version.

Well I just changed the title of the thread to RESTO so let's start!!

Previous owner thought it was a good idea to brush-paint it black so first thing i did was to completely dissasemble the winch and send the parts to the media blaster.
    Results are unbelivable!

first removed the motor with the welded gear.

The bad news are that the coil is damaged. Good news are that now I have an excuse for upgrading to a new 4.8HP motor. With the new motor I also solve the keyed gear problem as they come with a splined shaft.

Next part was removing the clutch.
You need to lift ~ 1 in. the retaining plate and pull the clutch assy.

It has been a slow process because I had a little issue with the new motor I ordered but next week it will be finished, I hope

The bearing was badly mounted on the shaft so it caused that when I thightened the bolts, the motor shaft pushed the end cap and breaked it.
I corrected the bearing position and contacted the seller for a new cap.

In other hand, At this moment the fairlead and the mounting plate are in the powder coat.

next week I will update with the finished pics.

The only things still missing are rolling the cable and replacing the box bolts that are a little rusted.

That's how I mounted all my older warn 8274 winches. Keeps them away from air flow, cuz they are so darn high. I think it looks cool to.

Looks great!!! I took mine apart after I purchased it and was glad that nothing has changed for so many years. They clean up nicely.
