My dad dropped off his 67 this weekend because it wont start. Ive worked on it most of the afternoon and cant get it to run. Stock v6, Pertronic ignitor, last year carb was professionally rebuilt, I replaced fuel filter, fuel pump etc. Today I swapped out all the plug wires, new cap and rotor, checked timing (It's on the 5 degree mark) and finally replaced the Pertronic's. I have spark at plugs, I dumped fuel down carb. but still only get one or two kicks now maybe, mostly nothing. still wont start, let alone run. This jeeps been running fine during the summer and only sat for a month or two. What am I missing? Getting frustrated, Usually with spark and fuel things run.

Describe the spark- nice & fat & purple or more of an orange colour?

I'd recommend checking to be sure you are at tdc on compression stroke #1 cyl.
Pull all spark plugs, rotate using a breaker, or ratchet and socket on damper bolt until you have timing mark on damper on 0 mark and then take a clean screwdriver and determine #1 piston is up all the way. If not rotate it another 360* and it should be.
At this point reinstall spark plugs and remove dist cap to determine if rotor is pointing at tower #1, if not you'll need to remove dist and re-index it so it's pointed correctly.
If you need to do this, remember to look at the orientation of the blade on the bottom of the dist shaft and the slot on the cam gear in the block. The rotor will rotate as the gears interlock, so index the slot a few degrees counter clockwise so the rotor points the correct direction and also make sure the vac advance pot on dist is pointing between 9 and 11 o'clock when viewed from front of engine.
Pertronix require full 12 v, jumper the wire from the 12 v side of ballast resistor on firewall using a splitter terminal (one female and two male terminals)

Try jump starting it on a hill, or with a tow? Give it a good fast prolonged spin…

Sometimes the starting circuit will draw the voltage down too low while cranking.
If so the battery or starter may need attention.

Battery is good, It's been on a charger and spins the engine great. Spark looks good, blue purple and strong. I also went through Pertronics checks for resistance, and also ran a 12v jumper to the pertronics. still no go. I'll double check TDC, but I find it hard to believe that the timing could suddenly be off by 180 degrees after running for years, but maybe I'm missing something. A guess I could have a fuel issue, but everything is basically new and also I dumped a little fuel in the carb. so that sould have made it kick and run for a second or two. What about a cam issue? I guess I can pull the valve covers and check to see if the valves are all moving correctly?

when it was running this summer was the pertronix in the dist? or was it a more recent install?
Without pulling covers a compression check will confirm valve closing and compression.
I mention the timing as I just went through a similar event with our jeep, no fire, dist was 180 out by previous owner.
One other thing is make sure there is a good ground and coil is grounded with bracket to block.

Pertronix has been in for years, no one has done any work to this Jeep but me in the last 10 years. Block strap, good one I'll check tomorrow. Thanks guys,

What was the last thing done to this motor and/or its subsystems?

Seems like it could be out of time since everything is present that it needs to start.

gas, spark, air. You seem to have that covered. Are you sure the timing chain hasn't jumped a tooth or more?

I had somewhat the same issue. Squirt fuel in the carb. Motor would fire for a second. Checked fuel at carb. Inlet no pressure when cranking. New fuel pump.
Pulled outlet hose off pump blew on it and had air going to the tank all good. Fuel would not flow from tank to pump. Wrapped a compressor hose with a rag and gave it a couple shots with the air. Bam! Fuel flowing freely. All works perfect now. Mebe an airlock????

I pulled fuel line off at carb and kicked it over, tons of fuel. fuel screen at carb is clean. I can see fuel squirt looking down cab and pushing linkage. As to what's been done recently before I got it here. nothing, its been sitting. When I fist checked timing, before moving distributor, timing was off bu about 10 degrees advanced. Maybe timing chain did jump a tooth? I guess I'll check tdc and position of #1 on dist. to double check.

Stupid question time- is the choke on/working? Air temp would be the only difference between then & now.

what do the spark plugs look like? Are they wet? Engine flooded maybe? Check the oil on the dip-stick for fuel contaminating the oil.

Sometimes when I've had this problem it was the fuel. Make sure there's not water in the fuel or that the fuel is too old. Maybe try some red heet and or seafoam.

If you have a test light (bulb/socket with two long wires and clips), you can static time to see exactly what the initial advance is. This should easily detect a jump-time condition.

did you or someone mess with the distributor cap and remove plug wires from it after the last time it ran good?? Plug wires moved around the cap will cause this.

Connect your timing light to #1 plug wire and have someone crank it while your watching for the timing mark to appear at *5 or so. If that is good then check your wire rotation 1-6-5-4-3-2 clock-wise. What did you replace the pertronics with?
